Da Yu Creates a Dark Art Illustrative Jorōgumo Tattoo | Tattoodo | Sessions

Inspired by Japanese tattoos, Da Yu creates a dark illustrative spider tattoo based on the mythological creature Jorōgumo in this episode of Sessions.

Based in Beijing, Da Yu, also known as Pinyeyu on social media, creates dark Illustrative tattoos that are highly inspired by mythological stories, fantasies, and folklore. We met up with her at the famed London Tattoo Convention as she created one of her intricately detailed pieces for a client. Da Yu mentioned how both Chinese and Japanese tattoo iconography have also influenced her dark art work. With this particular tattoo, she looked to the ancient tale of Jorōgumo, a yokai that can shapeshift from a beautiful lady into a spider woman that devours human flesh. Jorōgumo tattoos are often represented within Irezumi, but Da Yu has an incredibly unique style that merges Asian mythology with the fluid forms of Art Nouveau. The illustrative quality of her tattoos, the incredible details, and the overarching theme of mysticism gives her work a magic all their own.

Da Yu is not only inspired by spooky stories and myths, Da Yu says that when she was younger she used to listen to Linkin Park and loved Chester Bennington. His tattoos, and the music that he created, represented the type of creative expressive freedom that she resonated with. Now that she's creating ink all her own, Da Yu says that being a Chinese tattoo artist is similar to many other professions in that she mostly hopes to do a good job so that her clients are happy. This particular illustrative tattoo that we captured on film is a perfect example of the superb work that Da Yu creates; she works with her clients to make sure they're happy but is always working hard to evolve and grow as an artist.
