How to Limit CPU Usage of a Program in Windows [Tutorial]

There are times when one or more processes start taking 100% CPU usage in Windows 10/11. This may lead to a slow system. One solution to this issue is to limit CPU usage for specific applications in Windows 10/11. We will discuss these in this tutorial.

Keeping an eye on the usage of your CPU is pretty useful. This is because if your CPU is being overloaded, it can end up throttling which can lead to bad performance of your PC overall. As it turns out, this can significantly affect the day to day tasks that you perform on your computer. As such, you have to make sure that no program, which isn’t really important or running in the background, is taking away most of your CPU resource. In this tutorial, we are going to show you different methods using which you can counter programs that might be using more CPU than they should.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Alienware, Razer, MSI, Huawei , Microsoft Surface, and Samsung.

Thank you. 1 application went from 80% resource usage to 40% by clicking 2 checkboxes. Quick note, you won't see the option by right clicking the application. You have to view it under the details tab at the top first.

What if the processes I want to reduce CPU usage are actually root Windows processes ? For instance, AntiMalware service is often scanning files (usually after an update) but uses 20% CPU, while I am working on something else. I am ok having it doing background task, but it should be background, not 20%. This just causes my CPU to burn and my fan to go crazy.
These are precisley the type of tasks for which I am denied any change with this approach. I'd like to cap CPU usage, say at 5% for such.
