"Why would anyone take the harder option?" well that's the american mentality, isn't it?

Not only in Europe, it also happens in Latin America where most part of the new cars are sold with manual transmission, and exactly for the same reasons but the fuel, which is cheaper than Europe but more expensive than the US.

I remember the story when an American lady flew into Heathrow'and got a hire car after driving British a and b roads she phoned hire company to complain. No one knows how but she drove 200 miles in a brand new car in second gear assuming it's a automatic .

I love driving manual. You feel more involved with the whole driving experience. However, if I was in the US and had to drive some of the great state to state distances they have there, I'd definitely prefer an automatic.

Pros of manual:
- cheaper
- more reliable
- it is fun to drive on our often curvy countryside roads which are often in mountainous or hilly terrain
- it is fun to drive in general
- your girlfriend will probably not want to borrow and subsequently wreck your car

cons:
- wrong gear or bad footwork with the clutch? You look like an idiot because that sound can be heard on Mars :D

American with a Mercedes V8 Automatic:

There is also a social attitude. Everytime I tried to buy an automatic in the UK, every single driver tried to dissuade me. I ended up driving manuals for years, even though I never gelled with it. They just aren't for me but people forced me to go against my instincts with mantras such as "You don't want to forget how to drive properly" and "Automatics just aren't as efficient"

I am German 🇩🇪 and I am a very efficient manual driver. BUT I immensely enjoy driving a nice torque converter like in my old Mercedes W203 and my BMW E60. 💪 Especially after a long day of work. I want to sink into the seat and smoothly flow with the traffic. I am NOT a sporty or fast driver. I love cruising. So I totally get the US folks.

It will probably change because of electric vehicles. They will take the fun out of driving a car

as an european, i simply cannot comprehend how someone would not be able to drive a manual car, it is just so natural and very very easy to learn

a three cylinder would be an “inline-3” not a “V4”...

In the U.K. 3 years ago, I rented a car with a manual shift. The rental agency was surprised that someone on a U.S. driver's license could drive a manual. I did find much easier to drive than any manual in the U.S. It was very smooth shifting and the gear ratios were spaced out in such a way that I did not need to do as frequent a shifting when driving in city traffic.

Most european cars have inline-four engines, v4 engines are really rare

Driving a manual car is like ‘ok, you control me, tell me what to do and make sure I can do what you want me to do’ whereas an automatic is like ‘allow me, just press the gas, brake and turn the steering wheel’.

Honestly manual transmissions are the only thing I’ll miss in EV’s. Manual is not about having to work more, it’s about control, the car shifts when i tell it to do so. Hopefully EV drivers cars will be able to give me some of that control in the future.

I first drove automatic, then a buddy of mine teached me how to drive manual in his old Diesel truck. Gotta say I enjoyed it but I’m gonna stick with the automatic.
