Jacob’s Well, Wimberly, Hays County, TX. Most of the rock in this area is limestone. The karst resulting from its erosion consists of sinkholes like this with caves going off to the sides. Swimming is safe. Diving must be carefully done as the well is only 12’ in diameter However, free diving and scuba spelunking can be deadly. This main chamber is only 23’ deep, but one cave descends over 14 stories. Over 5000’ of the cave system has been mapped. The spring is fed by the Trinity Aquifer and at one time flowed at 170 gallons/sec. When first discovered, its flow was such that it produced a dome of water over 5’ high. Today, because so much water is used from the aquifer, only a ripple is seen on the surface, and in extreme drought the spring stops flowing and swimming is sometimes curtailed. I miss you, Hill Country. Instead of melting my butt off down there in the summer, I freeze it off shoveling snow in the Michigan winter…
