These types of pillows are super ancient. The oldest example of this type is a 9000 year-old stone pillow from Mesopotamia. Realistically, they were probably in use much much earlier. As for why people still use them: If you're sleeping on the ground, they're actually more effective than stuffed pillows at keeping insects and other critters away from your face and hair. They're also great for keeping complex hairstyles from getting messed up while you sleep.

Wooden pillows were also used in Japan and still is for some - It was to keep complicated hairstyles off the ground since they could only be fixed at certain times, so you could not mess it up. Also with sleeping on the floor, it is more hygienic to keep bug away from it. I think it was Korea or China, but they had Porcelain ones!
