Testing of a vintage analog tachometer gauge from the 70s with an engine RPM simulator.

The simulator is based on a Beaglebone Black Single-board Computer, running Debian 9. The app that it's executing generates a PWM signal of fixed 50% duty cycle and varying frequency according to the RPM speed set by the operator, which is then visible on the display. The signal is DC, with an amplitude of 12 V.

The output frequency in Hz is directly proportional to the engine speed in RPM. The gauge expects a signal coming from the distributor points, which in turn run at half the speed of the engine due to the 1:2 coupling, and thus compensates by internally multiplying it by two. As such, f = RPM / 30, where f is the frequency fed to the gauge, and RPM is the shown RPM on the dial (and on the simulator's LCD)

The simulator has two modes, which can be toggled with the push button control:

- Manual: the operator can set any RPM (frequency) manually between 0 and 7000 RPM
- Sweep: the simulator automatically does a sweep of output frequencies (the equivalent to the 0-7000 range), starting from the minimum to the maximum value and back. The rate of frequency change is 1.5 s for smooth transitions. Any input on the rotary control is ignored, unless the push button is actioned to toggle back to manual mode.

The oscilloscope is set up with:

- x: 5 ms/division
- y: 5 V/division

Other setup details:

- I2C LCD 16x2 character display
- 20-pulse rotary encoder and push button
- Level shifter from 3.3 V to 12 V

Hello, I want to try a tachometer with an arduino for datsun 510, it's from 1972, but I don't know how, I have a 5v and 12v power supply but in terms of the arduino I don't know what code to use and what connections to use, could you help me by favor? Or what card can you suggest to try it?
