Why is it called 'Catfish'?

The meaning of catfish is deeper than I originally thought haha

Do you know that here in the UK fish takeaways use Catfish and pass it off as Cod and sell it. The Catfish is way cheaper than Cod, but the cooked flesh is very similar. So the Cod Supper you buy is also pretending to be something it's not and it's fraud!

I think it would have been cool to call it Anglerfish. Those are the fishes that hide out in the dark and lure unsuspecting fish to their doom.

Thought it was called Catfish because when you go catfishing, you reach for the fish but end up getting stung - happened to me as a child on Thailand when I went mud fishing

I thought it was called catfish because you expect a catfish to look like a cat otherwise the name would make no sense but when you see a catfish youre like wtf that looks nothing like a cat so in real life youre like wtf that looks nothing like their profile picture

I loved his story about the catfish. That has stayed with me since first seeing Nevs Catfish movie. My cousin had a cat named catfish and I wondered how she come up with that name. It dawned on me when I saw the movie :/

I watched the documentary expecting to find it hilarious but it was actually really upsetting, I ended up feeling so bad for the "catfish" lady like I had a lump in my throat :(

I also thought another good reason would be because the art of noodling is to place your hand or foot in front of a catfish den to get a fish to like using someone else's photo to "catch" them. Js
