Hey I’ve been experiencing this ammonia smell in my urine for a couple years. My gynecologist never helps. I do have type 2 diabetes, and I don’t believe my ammonia smell is for any reason in your list except the Kidney Disease. Could high blood sugar cause this since the kidneys get rid of all toxins in the body? Maybe I need to go to a urologist, I also have bladder pressure pain. She always says I’m fine it’s from prolapse from having 2 kids. I’m still not convinced and feel like it’s not normal to have this smell.

I have had this problem since my last, 4th birth, almost 3 and half years ago. I guess it is because of dehydration due to breastfeeding? I am still breatsfeeding as my toddler cannot stop and I let her as she does not eat normal food enough. I hope once we stop breastfeeding for good, my odour problem will be gone. My sex life is nonexistent and I have depression because of the smell which is very pungent. My genitals smell just literally seconds after shower. Though I am not leaking an urine.

I have had a pungent smell (which I can't pin down-it's sort of ammonia like but not purely) from my urine for the past year or so. I called my gyn as I couldn't get to her and asked her about it and she said (I am 71) that with age comes stronger smell. I am not dehydrated, pregnant (obv!) and my blood tests were basically normal that I recall. She told me to use borax suppositories which sometimes help, but they didn't help. So I'm sort of stuck with this and it's really aggravating.

Is there a correlation between a high ammonia concentration in urine and diabetes? Can a high concentration of ammonia be a side-effect of extremity swelling? Are there some medications that can cause high concentrations of ammonia in urine?

Hey doc! So the doctor i just saw last month told me my tests were "normal" and that it was a uti..but i felt unheard due to me having odor issues for YEARS..many trips back&fourth with different places...odors change but still there even AFTER showers..waiting to see if my application goes through to see a gynecologist specialist since my current insurance doesnt offer this..😢

I got blood work, urine test and a swab and all negative. The urine is so potent and mix between ammonia and fishy smell. Never in my life have I had this and the doctor doesn’t think I need to see a gynaecologist. Just to drink water and put plain yogurt up there…. it’s a temporary fix and god forbid you miss one day, the smell comes back with a vengeance and I don’t see sticking yogurt up there for the rest of my life. I’m so frustrated:(
