Working the curves Part 1

Показать описание
Working the curves; Using the PlasmaCAM, Bridgeport and the Clausing lathe to create a smooth machined shape to a set of pulley castings that duplicate an original set of antique ones, either broken or missing.
Part 1; the creating the pattern and setting up the tracer attachment and the rough castings on the Clausing lathe and Part 2; covers the adjustments and use of the tracer unit on the Clausing lathe.
These pulleys are for a J. A. Vance Matcher / Planer, owned by Georgia Museum of Agriculture, where Keith Rucker owner of Vintage Machinery, has been volunteering his work for many years and is currently working on this machine at the museum.

Keith, I got the biggest smile on my face when I saw you Palm that file each time you took a pass with it across the stock. I said to myself "In all my years in the machine shop I've never seen anyone do that But it makes sense! You want to make sure that you're next pass is going to be with a clean So your hand becomes a file card! THIS MAN IS A TRUE MACHINIST."

It's the little things that a good machinist Sometimes hardly That helps him to perfect the art.

Keith, you are one of the last of many generations of machinists, true craftsmen. I love watching you work your magic.

Hi Keith, I can't stop watching the PlasmaCam.  What a cool tool.  I'd be cutting things all day long if it was mine.  Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with the rest of us.  You are a true master.  Old school like they don't make them anymore.
Regards
Johan

Back in the 70s I was on a submarine tender and we had a lathe with the True Trace system on it. Nobody knew how to operate it but me and nobody wanted to learn it because they claimed set-up was too much hassle. That was way before the navy adopted the CNC machines used today.

Keith,
Great Video.  The Pittsburgh calipers were a surprise.  They seem to be pretty good.

I like the continuous use you make of precision instruments, gauges, dial indicators and micrometers are your faithful companions of work, but, to no avail if you do not put your hard work and your huge responsibility, good work.

Very nice teaching of the process to setup and finish the part. Thanks for your efforts!

Keith Thank you for sharing. I'm a subscriber and whenever I loose interest and drag my feet, I find myself watching your vids and it gets me going and gets me motivated again about my shop and metalworking machining.  I do mostly cnc, job shop type work.   I also second the comment you made about the sharpie.  Maaaan you can never find one when you need the damn sharpie, even when I forced myself to take on the habit of carrying one inside my chest pocket.  It's never there when needed.   LOL Thank you our friend, keep up the chanel and good luck to your work.!!!   From a fellow colleague machinist Albert F.

Hi Keith Its about one hour before sun up in Idaho 1, 20, 14. First thing, I logged on and seen your new project. Well,  for myself I can say you take the vertical learning curve and lay it down in haste with your knowledge. I think I can speak for most, if not all of your viewers. I can not thank you enough. M.K.S.

I really wish I had a tracer attachment for my little southbend 9a. I was turning a 75mm bowl the other day hand tracing a radius with an indicator. It worked ok but a tracer attachment would be heaven. Great Video!

I was taught not to sand in your way and I didn't understand. Now I see why. Glad to see you are not injured.

This is kinda funny that I turned my friend onto Kieth Fenner's channel and he keeps talking about Keith Rucker's channel.  I just assumed he was getting the last name confused until I stumbled across Keith Rucker's channel.  I've been catching up watching Keith Rucker's channel and following this pulley thread. Keith Rucker talked about farming out the curved part of the pulley and then I see this video in the side bar. Small world.
