My hair is naturally porous but it’s soft and shiny because I don’t dye it or use heat (rare) so it’s in good shape. All my hair fell out before so now I baby it!!

I used to do that to my hair when it was long and very frizzy, I got my hair cut very short and started taking better care of it and it is so smooth

Dunk your head in water. If your hair only appears damp, you have low porosity. If your hair takes hours to air dry, your hair is likely low porosity. If your hair dries within minutes to an hour, it's probably high porosity. High porosity usually means damage. Medium/normal porosity is tge easiest porosity to keep healthy because hair absorbs and maintains moisture easily and doesn't dry out or stay wet forever.

Hairstylist here, that will tell you if you have dry, damaged, ends. 😂 If you want to do an actual porosity test prior to doing any kind of chemical service to your hair, you would take a strand of hair and cut it down so there is only a few inches of the end of the strand remaining or the driest part. Then you would take this small end section of hair strand and place it in either a cup or bowl of plain water to see how it reacts.

If the piece immediately soaks up the water and sinks, then the hair is too damaged to apply any chemical services without first cutting off the damage if it is at all possible or doing conditioning treatments and hair trims until it is grown out.

On the other hand if the piece of hair floats or floats for several minutes and then sinks then you can move forward with chemical services on the hair as long as you are careful and keep an eye on things like not processing too long or using too high a volume of developer than is needed.

This is called a float test and can mean the difference between someone leaving the salon with their hair or bald spots. 🤷

i have mixed porosity hair. some strands are “scaly & nasty” from root to tip, some are very fine & soft. how can i take care of my hair if it’s all mixed textures?

I’m surprised that hair in a cup thing took off tbh. The way I was taught to check porosity in college was to take a strand of hair at the top of the head slightly wet fingers hold the hair strand up and slide down the hair in the opposite direction. Oh and to add if it feels smooth then it’s not porous.

So my hair is not porous.. yet no hair colour stays in it, not even permanent. I always thought my hair was too porous so everything falls out, but it feels smooth all over 🙃

Mine is dead straight. Very delicate and Fine and refuses curl and is so silky (not bragging) barrettes n clips slide out of it. So I can’t wear them. So it is ponytail or down for me. The only 2 options. Tried bleaching it once. It melted. 😅
