When should I worry about eye symptoms?

There are some other conditions which need urgent attention. Uveal/choroidal melanoma ie eye cancer might present with flashes or discomfort but is usually symptom free and is generally found by opticians. This is a very rare condition but untreated can be fatal should it develop into secondaries. The cancer is unlike more common ones as it travels via the blood vessels and not the lymphatic system. Secondaries go directly from Stage 1 to Stage 4. For this reason we should all have an annual dilated eye examination in order for any of the current palliative” treatments to have effect.
Another far more common eye condition is known by the acronym NAION. In lay terms it can be described as a mini-stroke in the eye. The condition can cause severe loss of vision. It is currently not treatable and whilst it may resolve in 3 weeks to 3 months in some cases it remains unresolved. Often it spreads to the other eye.
