Finding God in the Darkness.

St. John of the Cross spoke of the dark night of the soul.

This term is often misunderstood as simply any difficult time in one's life. However, properly understood, the dark nights (whether active or passive, whether of the senses or of the soul) are times of transition for us. As painful as the disorientation or frustration of the dark night be, it is really good news. It is a sign we are growing and changing and setting aside one more impediment to a closer union with God. Perhaps we could think of the dark night as the birthing pains that produce a new, richer, deeper life in God. This video offers some examples of what the experience of the dark night might be for one in the stage of purgation.
