The fact that it was the Tartars who betrayed them, while the Serbians fought till the end is mind-boggling to me

Timur won the battle before it even started, he wasn't even on the battlefield at the moment Bayezid was captured but in his tent playing chess with one of his generals

Serbian knights were vassals of the Ottoman Empire, very good and disciplined warriors. Primarily very experienced fighters, they gave the Ottomans the heavy cavalry they did not have.

Bayezid after battle: *I didn't lose a friend, I just realized I never had one*

Until Bayezid was betrayed, he repulsed all the attacks of Timur and even counter-attacked and he was very close to winning the battle. The betrayal of the Anatolian soldiers and the Tatars changed the course

Lazar and Murat were both killed in battle on Kosovo field on the 28th. of June 1389. Than Lazar's son Stefan Lazarević, the second best swordsman in Europe in that period came to help Murat's son Bayazed, who strangled his own brother Yacub, as wassal. He led 5000 serbian knights in that battle, and was released by Timur, because he could not belive that some wasall would fight so bravely for someone who intended to conquer his country.

Everyone forgets just 6 years ago Bayezid fought a hard battle against Crusaders at Nicopolis 1398. The crusader army consisted of battle hardened French, Hungarians and armored knights from all over medieval Europe. It was a force which could be resembled to modern day Nato.

Famous British military historian Jeremy Black says that the Ottomans fought successfully in the Battle of Ankara and the betrayal of the Tatars destroyed this success.
Jeremy Black, The Seventy Great Battles in History

The French orientalologist Jean Paul Roux says that the Ottomans repulsed the Timurids and defeated them with a counter-attack, but they lost the battle after the betrayals. He also adds that there is very little left for Bayezid to reach victory.

As Uzbek I can say that, it was bad decision ever made. But Timur was triggered by Boyazid yildirim.
