Giant-Size Jean Grey / Emma Frost Review: Where Does It Fit In X-Men Dawn of X?

Few power players in the world of X-Men are as essential to Krakoa with as much baggage between them as Jean Grey and Emma Frost, two of the world’s most powerful telepaths and members of Krakoa’s quiet council.

Today I'll answer:
+ What does this Giant-Size special mean for Jean and Emma in the Krakoa era?
+ What’s the big picture role of the 5 Hickman written Giant-Size specials in Dawn of X?
+ What do you need to know about the history between Jean and Emma?

In our first of five Giant-Size issues written by Jonathan Hickman, with alternating artistic showcases, we get Russell Dauterman and Matt Wilson – the powerhouse duo that made the Jane Foster era of Thor and War of the Realms so incredible – taking on a Jean Grey and Emma Frost combo adventure.

For all Comic Book Herald X-Men videos:

As we’ve seen, despite the duo’s history, by the time House of X and Powers of X culminate in a new Krakoan nation state for mutantkind, Jean and Emma are amicable enough and together enough in their cause to share a beer and celebrate. Giant-Size really cements that allyship yet again in ways that are undeniable, albeit still breakable in future stories!

Comics discussed include:
Giant-Size X-Men: Jean Grey and Emma Frost
New X-Men #121
Uncanny X-Men #151, #152
New X-Men #139

Dauterman earned that story credit that was given to him in this issue. This was an absolutely gorgeous issue to both read and look at it. What a wonderful homage to New X-Men #121 as well!

Storm was infected in X-men #5 when she was hit by that beam from that drone protecting the vault.

This could have easily misfired, but wow, what a stunning homage to New X-Men 121. Really really enjoyed this!

The spirit guardians of Storms mind are a lion & lioness . Representing Africa where she's from" Kenya" and her ancestry/ godhood.

Holy crap the art in this is out of this world good. Everything is so clean, the colors are vibrant and used very well. Man I wish we could see Dueterman(however it's spelled) on more DoX titles.

I really loved this book! I had no idea it was going to be a silent issue but I was happily surprised. I'm excited for the nightcrawler issue the most as he's my favorite X-Men and we havn't seen much of him in this new Dawn of X. Im curious if this is where he'll start his new mutant religion and what that would even look like. Fantom x is always a fun crazy wild card so im looking forward to his as well because we still need to see how Mojo fits into this new landscape. Last I know he was trapped inside the Mojo verse but I could be mistaken

I pretty sure that Storm was infected when she got blasted in the "battle" with the CotV in X-Men. Scott asks if she alright and Storm just shrugs it off with a yes...she may have been sure at the time but with what we know of the CotV tech...her ailment could have taken a while to become apparent. Also these one-shots were initially meant to be "annuals" so the timing of events are not necessarily in sequence with what is currently going on in the books.

Why is Jean wearing a different outfit in this issue and that ridiculous 60's outfit in all the other x-men titles?

Emma Frost looks like Elsa on the cover

That wasn’t Jean, that was the Phoenix making itself look like Jean. Jean was in a cocoon at the bottom of Jamaica Bay.

We don’t know the time frames of these comics, the Marauders could be before the confrontation with the children of the vault.

The art's gorgeous, but I always feel a little ripped off by silent issues.
