Nuclear Wasteland Dev Progress: Radiation, Fallout & Fungi | OppenMiner Dev v0.1.8

Development Update for my Minecraft Mod called OppenMiner.

Recently, I've started working on an actual nuclear wasteland that will be dynamic and evolve around the player as they try to survive. As you can see, currently I'm working on some fungi slowly growing out of the rubble as well as a basic fallout mechanic inluding (for now cosmetic) radiation that can be noticed by white specs / flashes of light as well as a geiger counter sound that's dynamic based on how much radiation is around the player.
Going forward, I want to implement actual adverse radiation poisoning as well as the mushroom cloud rising further and spreading out over a large area, slowly getting carried away by the wind and falling back down to earth as fallout.

In the future I want the nuclear wasteland to include different irradiated plants, fungi and mutated mobs as well as overhanging charred blocks randomly crumbling and falling down so the player gains a sense of a world in decay even some time after the initial nuke explosion is over.

Download will be available once the mod is further in development. I'll keep posting updates on the chanel in the meantime

I'm hoping that Geiger counter sound will be tied to an actual Geiger counter item you can use and not just an ambient noise, because I feel like it would end up being a little annoying. This looks really promising!

This is literally all I've ever wanted out of a minecraft mod, a realistic nuclear explosion, with a shockwave & looks like it fits in the game. No nasty 3d models that look weird. This is amazing, I cannot believe you were able to create the cloud circle that forms above Mushroom Clouds

Thats crazy, i love how this mod captures the truly terrifying aspects of a nuke
its not just a "4000 x 4000 tnt" like most mods

Not the End update we wanted, but the end update we deserved.

The fact that being exposed to radiation gives you the little sparks in your eyes is a nice touch

I've seen a lot of "nukes" mods, where it's essentially just a humongous TNT explosion. This one, this is a real nuke in Minecraft. Incredible.

Please do NOT give up on this mod! We need you working on this even further!

I hope that in the future the area of effect will be "flawless", as in no leaves or logs in trees will remain perfectly normal and trees wouldn't be floating out and about, still a very cool looking mod and i will be following its developtment

I love how being in a wasteland materialises a geiger counter in the possession of any player character

Awesome that this video is picking up in views. Take a look at the description in terms of what I've planned. I'll respond to your comments tomorrow as it's getting late here. I'll keep posting update videos and discuss your ideas in future videos and eventually release it publicly so subscribe to keep up to date. See y'all soon!

Edit: Since this video is blowing up while I'm spending Christmas holidays with my family, I won't be able to answer y'all's questions. Still reading all of them though. Once the new year rolls around, I'll record a video where I'll do my best to address all of them and talk in more detail about what I've planned for the future. Really love some of your suggestions!

This is great. I will definitely be following this project. But I have some suggestions.

1. Make all burnable blocks and things burn when the flash happens

2. Make the shock wave a bit faster and make it actually destroy structure

3. Add nuclear war heads or bombs along with launchable ICBMs

4. Have the ability to have HOB to the ICBMs and under water explosions

I think the geiger counter sounds would drive me insane, but so long as that's toggleable this is otherwise fantastic, excellent job!

A craftable Geiger counter sounding the alarm as soon as the fallout comes would probably be the least consoling thing you could add.

Dont see many people mentioning it, but i love the low hums and eerie ambience noises, it adds SO much.

I think I found something that you can somehow implement is someway into this mod:
At Chernobyl, they found a new fungus that used the radiation to fuel its metabolism. They noted how it was black, just like the frogs had become, to protect themselves from radiation. They also said that it is possible to use this fungus to protect people from radiation. This could be a very neat concept to add into this mod.

Fantastic job on recreating the best atomic explosion in Minecraft! To enhance the experience further, consider these suggestions:

1. Ensure the initial flash of light maximizes brightness instantly, causing nearby objects to ignite before the shock wave, altering their texture with a charred/darkened counterpart using a smoke effect (Thermal radiation). Entities too close should perish instantly.

2. Introduce an instantaneous release of high radiation within a certain distance of the explosion (Initial radiation).

3. Sync the explosion sound with the shock wave, with maximum intensity at the start, followed by attenuation and a diminishing background sound.

4. Make the "sound" of radiation audible only through the player's inventory object, the geiger counter. This adds suspense, as players won't gauge radiation levels without the item, yet still feel its effects.

5. Opt for a crater that's wider than deep, allowing better exploration of the area. Instantly remove any blocks or entities within the fireball radius.

6. Consider aligning the condensation cloud parallel to the standard Minecraft clouds for a visually cohesive effect.
