James Marsters is such a compelling actor, and brilliantly brought Spike to life, especially in this episode.

What most people don't realize is that Spike is a poet, and a pretty good one. He always sees through all the people around him and when he was evil, that made him so cruel, because he always knew where it would hurt the most.

Before he gets his soul back, he stopped Glory from finding out Dawn was the Key. He said he could not live if Buffy was in that much pain. I love Spike for his best and worst.

Don't forget that Spike fought by the Scoobies and took care of Dawn after Buffy died, with zero expectations of anything because she was dead. I did a rewatch of season 6 recently and I have to say, Buffy is the one who is leading the relationship into toxic land the majority of the time. She kisses him, then runs; he shows up and says "hey let's talk about that." She insults him, tells him it was a mistake and that it's never happening again. Then she kisses him again. This repeats like 3 times, each time with him saying "can we talk about this?" She refuses to talk about it, and they come to blows, then they sleep together. After which she insults him, tells him it's never happening again...repeat. If a hero type guy had done that to a woman erstwhile villain, nobody would be laying the blame at the woman's feet. Buffy's behavior was pretty terrible towards Spike, no matter what way you cut it. She was the one who initiated a relationship based on "I won't talk to you unless we're punching each other and you're trying to best me physically."

The AR scene makes me mad to this day. I say that as a survivor myself.

"I don't want anything from you. I just care about you." It's a sentiment so rare, it's so safe. We don't get that from men often enough.

This is probably my favourite Spuffy scene on the show. I love his speech but my favourite thing is the juxtaposition of pure physicality that they had in S6 with actual intimacy they share here. They connect perfectly with each other without sex or manipulation.



COMICS SPOILERS:
They grew so beautifully and healthily as a couple in the comics I just regret we never saw it on screen. 2 great actors that deserved better careers IMO.

I said it a few times, but the fact that this couple who have only dealt with each other in the past by fighting or having sex, in an episode where the other couples are getting it on, can just be together in the moment, taking comfort from just holding one another is one of the most beautiful and telling scenes in the entire series.

I would like to see your take on Tara. The trials of a healthy relationship and the inclusion of a kind, nurturing, and supportive person to a group of traumatized outcasts. I can't say enough about that character or Amber Benson's overall vibe in carrying her.

It was my favorite Spuffy scene. They were such a complicated pairing, always changing. I certainly loved their sexual chemistry together, but I always thought this scene ultimately defined them

I adore Spike and his journey. Even when he didn't have a soul he wasn't as bad or evil as the other vampires. After he first was changed, he still loved his mother who was sick, and wanted to save her. She immediately turned on him and wanted nothing to do with him when she was turned. Broke my heart for him. I feel like a lot of how he behaved was learned behavior from other vampires and giving into the demon inside him. Eventually he became pretty evil. But he did change after being on the show a while and getting to know Buffy. He was good to her mom and sister when he could have just killed them so many times(as other vampires would have done). He did realize he was a monster and needed his soul and went and got it. He had a redemption arc and I was really glad to be able to watch him grow.

The speech he gives I can almost say word for word, even after all these years. And I love the moment after that, when they see each other again at the house and are both a bit weird and then Spike asks 'was it real? were you really there'.

Great scene. I love that all of Spike and Buffy's complicated past relationship culminates into this tender and platonic, but still very romantic demonstration of love. Can something be platonic and romantic at the same time? It can here. And it is perfect.

Later she tells him she loves him bc he’s dying, and he says no you don’t, but affectionately. It’s KILLER! The bot ep is so problematic too, but he admits to FakeBot!Buffy how much Buffy means even though he doesn’t have a soul and has a lot of terrible impulses he’s barely checking at the time. Spike is my favorite character!

Spuffy is hands down one of the best ships. Both characters grew so much and their relationship developed into something that could've been so freaking beautiful. I love them and spike is also one of my faves.
