or you could have just slid it all the way down to the adjoining joist and still got the same angle without using the 2x4 and marking a line

Or just know the pitch and mark a hip. It's the same. If they are two different pictches. The hip is always an average of the two.

I call my speed square a "Square" because that improves my speed in saying "take the Square."

You don’t have to use a block just use the speed square and you get the angle
