You're a professional, and you may have been doing this all your life...but...the snake only has to win once !

Nothing like going hunting for a Cottonmouth without a snake stick.

One thing to remember also, is even if they give you a dry bite without injecting much or any venom to get you to back off, you must take this bike seriously because of extremely nasty bacterial infections that can set in. A water moccasin's mouth has been in all kinds of stagnant water and has been eating amphibians such as frogs and salamanders and such without brushing their teeth. You can die from these infections even without venom and they are extremely hard to clear up sometimes.

I'm scared of 4 kinds of snakes : 1. A big one, 2 . A little one, 3. A dead one, 4. A live one .
Other than that .

Remember that guy who hung with Grizzly Bears in Alaska. He too could 'read' them. It didn't end good.

I was fishing with a friend in a aluminum boat in a backwoods swamp one day when my friend who was in the back of the boat yelled snake and jumped in the water, I looked up to see a large cottonmouth climbing in the boat from the trolling motor so I jumped in too. as far as I know that snake still owns that boat, motor and gear. wink

I know from experience unfortunately that their venom is necrotic as well. My lower leg was dissolving from the inside and after swelling and turning blackish I had very bloody pus coming out of several holes. The pressure from the swelling was EXTREMELY PAINFUL. The doctor said the bloody pus was actually my flesh, vein system, etc DISSOLVING as if it were the meal it was going to eat. Kind of a predigestion mode. A very nasty bite indeed that I don’t recommend to anyone.

I grew up in a swamp just like that. The most valuable advice my Daddy ever taught me was.." Watch where you step". I cannot tell you how many times that advice has saved my life..

I always laugh when people who handle venomous snakes call themselves "professionals" - as if they passed some state certification exam along with a specific university degree on venomous snakes. The only thing professional here is that you should know better than to allow yourself to be within striking distance of what you have identified to be a venomous snake. Self-proclaimed "professionals" do get bit.

The moment he picked up the hollow log with his bare hand, I knew we had a super genius on our hands

Two points:

1) No matter how good you think you are at reading a snake's intent to strike before it does, I am just pointing out that you only have to misread that snake once in order to have your relatives plan your funeral.

2) A genuine professional herpetologist or game biologist would carry a snake hook into the woods with them so they could handle the snake safely and not try using a twig picked up off the forest floor. Just saying.

"My hand is within the strike zone, but I am a professional "!!! Graveyards are full of people who said the same If you were a true professional, you would not be so careless.

I'm not a snake expert but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night....

Doing it your whole life yet you went looking for water Moccasin's without a hook. Put your hands where they should never be . Doing something wrong for a long time does not somehow make it right.

Don’t let anyone tell you different. I was canoeing in the swamp years ago when one jumped in my canoe I jumped out and he stole my canoe. When I got back to my truck it was missing. Some ol boy gave me a ride home but even then I find out he drank all my beer and stole my weed. My truck was later found in the Everglades in 4 ft of water I’ve hated them ever since 😡

Well I always though snakes would leave you alone if you left them alone, I'm 70 yr old and the wife and I were fishing when a cotton mouth swam up to our boat, I swated him with my rod tip, he droped down & went to the back of our boat and started climbing in, I jumped up and started wacking at him with my rod, he just kept coming up beside the motor, I finaly shot him with my ruger 380 I carry, First one I had ever seen that
