I grew up near a bunch of abandoned slate and marble quarries. Everyone in the area knew not to go swimming in them, let alone jump in them because the water was always cool, but the uneven floor of the quarries also lead to colder areas that you could swim into unknowingly and could cause the same sort of shock and lock up as this pool. Every year a dive team would go up and do dive training for body recovery at the end of the summer and every year they would always pull at least one person who had been reported missing in one of the nearer cities.

My experience with this was at 3 pools in Oregon. My dad told me to be careful because it was snow melt, but some friends are jumping in, I'm young, I figure what's the worse that could happen. Easily one of the most terrifying experiences, immediately swallowed completely by cold, I couldn't open my eyes, and on top of my chest immediately feeling starved for oxygen, I realized I had no idea which way was up. Got lucky and panic swam in the right direction, broke the surface and flailed my seizing arms and legs until I got to where I could pull myself out. Never again.

Born and raised in Oregon, parents always made sure both my sister and I didn't jump into bodies of water for multiple reasons. Really glad it's one of the few things we listened to.

I love stuff like this. Scuba diving in a cave is obviously scary already. Claustrophobic and the fear of drowning in dark waters. Fire obviously scary. But things like this. A beautiful blue pool just beckoning you into it's watery depths. So alluring and yet so deadly. Nature is beautiful. ☺️
Edit: your science tangents are the reason I watch your channels.

The breakdown is cool. I woulda left it at "You know that thing that happens when you accidentally turn the cold water on in the shower? That will be what kills you here." But knowing why it happens is cool because now I'm aware that you can't brain power through it. Because I unironically thought "If I ever fall through the ice on a lake, I'm gonna remember to not do that"

My friend died bridge diving on a hot summers day with his friends, he was only 17. Hearing that opening was likely exactly how he went out and it bring a lot of perspective for me. Thanks

I’m a fitness professional & the amount of clients interested in cold plunges has skyrocketed, finally good to hear
someone else speaking the dangers. I’m glad you went into detail bc people need to hear this- very few even know the risks. Don’t plunge alone, don’t go in deep water, all good info- people will do what they like but man you gotta respect the dangers
Great video.

I'd definitely love if you keep the anatomical/scientific breakdowns you do in these videos just to learn more while listening to a cool story along the way.

This is very interesting- I'm a cold-water swimmer (specifically during the Winter here in the UK) and I've felt that reaction you mentioned a couple of times but fortunately i'm still here to talk about it. Brief cold water swims are actually good for you just, you know, know what you're doing and be safe and obviously don't go alone! Thanks for this!

The in depth academic explanations is a treat. Love the biological/anatomy/ molecular/microbiology reasoning for vampires, zombies etc that you give on Roanoke Gaming and it’s still nice to hear the same for these stories

I’ve lived in oregon my entire life and have swam in blue hole, it feels like a heart attack the moment you go under the water it’s no joke. It’s cool to see an area I’ve visited since a child in a video!

I actually went here just last summer! I went here without knowing anything about the place and literally made the exact mistake you mentioned. Long hike in direct sun light so I was sweating bad. I got to the pool and instantly wanted to jump in. Even got egged on by the person I went on the hike with, but I once jumped into water too cold before and almost drowned, so I am now much more careful and made sure to dip a foot in first. I've never recoiled so fast in my life xD I opted to splash my face and each time it was so cold it ripped the wind from me. I've never felt that off of just splashes before. This is definitely a story I resonated with. I could literally point to ever spot I was throughout the video, so it made it fun.

I was born from a dangerous wet hole in Oregon, and now I can die in a dangerous wet hole in Oregon. It's the circle of life.

Titanic survivors reported that the yelling stopped within a few minutes of the final plunge, the water being about 31F or so degrees.

“Isnt nature great!?”

One pitfall of having lived my entire existence in the city is: In nature, I have no clue what would kill me. One example was when I was swimming in Florida near Jupiter Beach, and I got caught in a riptide. Now, I was lucky, because I was very close to rocks that I could grab onto, but trying to get up over and over and over again as the water just pushes me back down was actually really scary. I knew about the diving reflex, but had no idea it could just stop your heart. That's crazy.

I think your ability to explain and breakdown the anatomical and scientific stuff in your videos adds a unique perspective to your videos cause anyone can talk about how cold water bad but it’s interesting to hear exactly why. Keep up the good work Roanoke 🙏

Dude, the science is part of why I love your channels. So much knowledge AND enthusiasm. It's what makes it great.
