Another fun fact, there is one (or at least something that looks very similar) in a NATO air base in Iraq. Its sits out-front of a military office building and you can use it to contact those inside (as well as other military phones on that network).

I remember using these all the time as a child. They were a great shelter from bad weather and nosey people who couldn’t listen in to your conversations, while you were inside.
They did cost a lot to maintain because people would damage them and do more than make phone calls in them. I remember them fondly though.

The same guy that designed the phone box also was the architect for Liverpool Cathedral, that’s why it’s the only UK cathedral with a built in phone box

Here in Australia most public phones are now free for use.

I left Britain 13 years ago and after some years stopped seeing phone booths (which i heavily used in England for international calls) anywhere else in Europe. Not long before that they still had up to two sets of white and yellow pages fastened somewhere. The design outside London area couldn't compete with the royal red (mostly cheaper stainless sheetmetal boxes), but they did their job and when broken were even usually repaired weekly (speaking of the rough North).

Now we don't have a single one left in my Eastern European region and it's a big loss imho. I thought everyone has done away with them for technological and safety reasons, and am happy it's not the case in England (even if half of them are broken in rougher areas).

We have a pink one here in germany (dunno if there's more but i saw one pink one)
And it actually housed a tiny library.
People bring books, or take books as they please.

Atleast the tourists love these. There was a whole ahh line to take a photo of yourself next to a phone booth somewhere near Thames when i visited.

Theres still a K1 box at the abandoned village of Tyneham in Dorset. Given over to the army during the second world war, the school and the church are the only buildings maintained to this day whilst the rest of the village is open to the elements. The phone box was the only phone in the village.
