Middle English is actually pretty easy to understnad, especially written. I'd encourage anyone to try Geoffrey Chaucer, who is just as brilliant today as he was 600 years ago. But Old English or anything earlier is basically a foreign lanhuahe, and is quite difficult. You can read "The Canterbury Tales", but not "Beowulf".

Middle English was mainly understandable if you focus. Before that is unrecognizable.
