Welcome back to RBR, and the Icon is back: the all-new #BMWM #M5 G99 Touring! The seventh-generation M5, and BMW M has delivered exactly what we’ve been craving—a third-ever #M5Touring.

While we had a good idea of its looks from the saloon, seeing it in person is an entirely different experience. In true M5 fashion, this Touring model sports a completely unique body, with a wider front and rear that look absolutely stunning. But the changes aren't just skin-deep; under the hood, we’ve got the same V8 hybrid system found in the saloon, bringing some serious performance upgrades. Today, we’ll explore all the modifications BMW M made to turn the standard 5 Series into this beastly M5, give you a proper interior review, and go over any specific changes on the Touring variant.

Watch my first drive on track of the sedan/saloon here:

Lately, BMW M has been ticking all the right boxes, from an M2 that’s still a RWD brute with a manual option, to the M3 Touring—a car that was once just a concept and now is one of the most popular M cars on the road. And now, they’ve topped it all off with the M5 Touring, which is even making its way to the USA. What a time to be a fan of BMW M!

The M5 Touring isn’t entirely new territory for BMW. The first-ever M5 Wagon was the E34, a 335 HP sleeper that hit 60 mph in under 6 seconds. But back then, the market wasn’t quite ready for it, resulting in low sales. The E39 missed out on a Touring version altogether, but the E60 brought it back with a thumping V10 and a unique body, though it was still ahead of its time. Now, with the G99, the timing seems perfect for a return.

Under the hood, it’s powered by a 585 HP V8, assisted by a 142 HP electric motor and battery, making for a total output of 727 HP and 1,000 Nm of torque. This setup propels the car from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, but that seems slow considering the horsepower: today we will discuss the true power via some power-to-weight calculations, and discuss the weight a little too.

The hybrid system uses an 18.6 kWh battery, giving a range of 67-69 km (42-43 miles) on electric power alone which looks to be accurate. However, as we said this new tech has added some serious weight. The new M5 Touring weighs likely 2,550 kg, a whopping 540 kg more than the previous M5.

But they have done a lot to negate this too, and as my first drive on track showed: there seems to be hope. For example we have M xDrive with an active M differential and a drift mode. The chassis features extensive rigidity measures and stiffening paired with the M Suspension and electronic dampers at each wheel. The steering has been improved with a rigid connection for better feedback and precision, and rear-wheel steering enhances agility.

On the design front, the M5 Touring is wider by 75 mm at the front and 48 mm at the rear. It comes with staggered 20/21-inch wheels, 100 mm quad exhaust pipes, and plenty of unique M touches like illuminated grilles and side arch extensions. Inside, the M-specific features continue with an illuminated steering wheel, M seats, and a comprehensive M Control panel that includes modes for every driving scenario, including a track-focused M Drive Professional mode. All of which we will go over today!

Not really a fan of the new M5 even as a previous F90 owner but this wagon has me reconsidering it. In that satin black the car would look sick.

Okay okay, the wagon look 80% better than the sedan. And because of this I feel like the sedan will become a slow burner and more people will end up liking it

I know power has bragging rights in the pub, but based on this design, I’d have 100 bhp less and order an RS6 performance,

People so negative about the weight and hybrid, without having actually driven the car. Is it not early to judge?
Great video, design of the car looks great!

Audi and BMW have always made the old "station wagon" look super cool!

The issue with these highly electrified and electronic cars is that it's hard to see them lasting for very long.

we thought that the regular hybrid m5 was heavier than everything in the known universe but this is 125 kg heavier

So much plastic! Front grille looks like an EV! So much weight! Why!

Deny it all you like, but it was Audi that made the modern day performance estate cars palatable, dare i say, in-vogue....

It's very nice, but struggling to get excited to replace my B5 Touring with one. Interior leather options look a bit limited too.

BMW's recent uninspiring weight and reliability reputation is somehow forgotten when you lay your eyes on the design of this new M5 touring. It's so sexy. I feel if you have the cash to maintain the M5, then you can enjoy it for what it is, a stellar performance machine, combining luxury, thrills, and presence. I love it despite the weird plastic pieces on the grill. It's f----n cool!

You all hate on the hybrid and the weight of the new M5 Touring, but most of you have probably never even been inside to drive one. I’m not saying I have either—I don’t even have a car yet. But I bet 90% of you have never been in a luxury car or anything more expensive than your mom's Toyota💀

I am asking all reviewers to mention something about auto stop/start function and whether it can be deactivated. Does being a hybrid allow manufacturers to NOT even put in auto stop/start?
Any car I look at that I really like but has an auto stop/start it gets cancelled. I don't care how good the rest of the car is.

Beautiful car! Gear selector not an issue. Levers gave mechanical advantage in days when the lever actually moved the gears. This is a switch to basically select forward, neutral, park, or reverse. In manual, mode gears are changed with the paddles. One selected you won't touch the "lever" until you stop or need to reverse. Same as objections to having temperature controls on a screen. Once set, you hardly need to touch them whilst driving. It's just nostalgia for the old days. Me? Total petrolhead

Honest question. “Testing” / reviewing both cars, which car would you personally choose between the Panamera GTS and the M5 wagon?

Hybrid vehicle technology is fantastic. Electrification takes performance and efficiency to a new level. You can reject it because you like old technology. But anyone who has driven an electrified combustion engine knows that this technique is fantastic and superior.

Those rear arches looking quite weird from the side. Front is ok, from the side looks weird and rear looks really good but In the matter of styling cyrrent Rs6 is the King and if im not mistaken performance version is faster?

I see it still has a face only a mother could love, also what is the point in the V8 if the limiter makes it sound like shit? might as well be electric 😄
