Poseidon refers likely to Poseid (or Poseidia), the capital of Atlantis. The Atlanteans had apparently a huge navy and ruled the seas. The continent sank apparently in an upheaval of earthquakes in a single day and night. That would account for the legends.

Nice theory, except you overlooked the fact that gods are immortal and don't need air to survive and would be unaffected by acid. Also, there are animals that swallow their own babies, and let them out later.
