Same reason why Indians used banana leaves during ceremonies to feed hundreds of guests, besides being cheap and abundant.

I am south indian and prefer eating with a banana leaf instead of a plate in hotels, it just makes everything good.

Thank you for coming up with this topic. In Nigeria we have a delicacy called “moi-moi”. It’s essentially puréed beans, onions, red bell peppers, hot peppers, salt, seasonings. I’ve seen variations with a pinch of ginger, small amount of coconut milk, palm oil, etc. I also add a half boiled egg, and chunks of corned beef. It’s a “protein bomb”😅. It’s traditionally steamed in banana leaves and the aroma when you open it and flavor when you eat it is indescribable. The aroma from the banana leaf is infused deeply into the moi-moi during the steaming process. If you can’t find banana leaves, you could use shallow tins or foil doesn’t add anything to the flavor.

I love to eat it just by itself but you can eat it with rice and stew, jollof rice, etc.😋

That explains why moimoi tastes so good when you use the leaves rather than nylon(a Nigerian delicacy)👌

Banana leaves are good for composting... just have to cut them into small pieces. If placed on top, it'll block the watergetting in and don't composting as easy.

I'm from Kerala. We put banana leaf on the frying pan and then pour oil on it to fry fish. Tastes much better.

I now have a hard time being near warm banana leaves because they cause the area im in to smell like my grandmother's house, specifically the kitchen, who I loved very much and who passed away in her 90s less than a year ago. Especially boiled banana leaves. Whenever I smell it I get the urge to start bawling my eyes out. Makes me miss her so much. Hopefully one day I'll simply be able to smile in joy and good memories whenever I smell it. That will be a good day. I'm glad to now know more about the science behind it. Great video.

In Puerto Rico we use them to make "pasteles, empanadas de yuca" to cover "arroz con gandules" and a lot more and it does give it a special flavor❤

In Vietnam, we have been using banana leaves to wrap and preserve food for a long time. Our most traditional dishes are wrapped in banana leaves.
