Stop Root Tabs from Popping Up

Root tab capsules have an annoying habit of floating up because they have air trapped in them. Thanks to Zenzo for teaching me how to keep them from popping out of the ground!

🛒 MATERIALS I USED
(I work for Aquarium Co-Op but do not receive commissions from their links.)
▶ Safety pin (I originally used a push pin but it was too big and shattered the root tab)

Poke two holes. Water goes in one, air goes out the other. Water doesn't like going in a hole air is coming out of and vice versa.

XD for some reason I though the solution was to give it to the shrimp

When you mentioned “Zenzo” I thought that was the name for your shrimp for a split second 😂

Definitely thought you were gonna hand him the pill and he’d just crimp and force it under the dirt😭

Omg I needed this video, not only they don't stay in the ground, once they're in the ground they somehow pop up a little thru the sand. Glad you made this video, this will make things much easier!

A lot of people are asking why she’s an aquarist while not liking getting her hands wet; I’m not her, but I personally have a lot of sensory issues, and sometimes I really can’t stand getting my hands wet, though I often love it. But also, disliking the feeling of water doesn’t really completely clash with being an aquarist, some people just dislike water on their skin but could love every other aspect of the hobby. With all due respect, I don’t really understand how people think you can’t be an aquarist like this?

Fun tip. Use fertilizer powder to make a liquid, put those in ice trays, Freeze, slide the ice cubes into the substrate where needed. Cheapest ferts you can get. Obviously to use a ton in a small tank because they are frozen.

I've got some jungle Val spiralis coming next week, and some root tabs. Great tip because my substrate is polished gravel and I think they'll need root tabs.

I’ve read somewhere that root tabs don’t really matter to aquatic plants! Since they’re aquatic plants, they also take in nutrients through their leaves unlike their land counterpart

Nice! I used the pin method from your older video but it still only kinda worked. I sort of figured out this technique but was worried it would all spill, so I'll be more confident now!

Great tip Irene! I always have the same problem so I will have to try it out 😊

I prefer to just get ones that sink, like the Seachem ones, but each to their own I guess!

Edit: Switched to Aquarium Co-Op root tabs after all after my plants started to not grow after a while of using Seachem ones. Here’s to hoping they work! I haven’t had any issues with them floating so far so maybe they pack their root tabs a little differently now…?

What a cute little Mexican dwarf cray!
I used to have one a few years ago in my planted tank, it died randomly a few months after I bought it.
I think I’ll get a new one pretty soon! I miss their personality! 😁
