Anita Baker is celebrating her 66th birthday today, January 26, 2024. She is an American singer-songwriter known for her soulful ballads, particularly from the height of the Quiet Storm period in the 1980s. Starting her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8, Baker released her first solo album, The Songstress, in 1983. In 1986, she rose to fame following the release of her Platinum-selling second album, Rapture, which included the Grammy-winning single "Sweet Love". As of 2017, Baker has won eight Grammy Awards and has four Platinum albums, along with two Gold albums. Baker is a contralto with a wide range of octaves. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 26, 1958

Baker teamed with former Chapter 8 bandmate Michael Powell for her wonderful Elektra debut, Rapture, released on March 20, 1986. It was an instant classic that virtually defined adult soul for the next decade and thrust Baker to the forefront of popular music. The first single, "Watch Your Step, " was a moderate Soul hit, but it was the catchy follow up ballad, "Sweet Love, " that brought across-the-board attention to the album and resulted in Baker winning 1986 Grammy Awards for best R&B Female Vocalist and best R&B Song. A legendary career was cemented with Rapture. The album still sounds great all these years later and Anita Baker remains a part of our lives as an all-time singer supreme.

I believe I was 10 or 11 when i saw her in 91 or 92 at the Wisconsin state fair front row. I've never gotten that sweet soulful voice out of my head since. Still rockn some Ms. Anita!

The first time I heard this woman sing, it was this song and I understood what sailors would have heard when they listened to the mythical sirens. I played it over and over, never tiring, imagining all the while that she was singing to me. Here I am now in 2023 experiencing it all over. Wow, she is all that and a matured fine wine. ❤
