Electric Guitars And Acoustic Amplifiers

In this video, Dave answers a question that was sent in by someone asking about how well an acoustic guitar amplifier would work with an electric guitar. Here, Dave demonstrates a number of different electric guitars in conjunction with a Yamaha THR5A acoustic guitar amplifier (and throws in an ovedrive pedal as well, to hear how this type of amp handles a dirty tone).

Wow! This had SUCH a nice tone! Just what I was looking for, and never thought to look for it in an acoustic amp. But then I saw someone selling this not too far from me, and thought I'd see how it sounded with an electric guitar, stumbled upon your video, and now I really want it. Thanks for this video! 😁

I hit this problem this afternoon - playing through a mixer and a pair of Nu-X acoustic combos. It made my strat sound 'buzzy' and very dull. Even the bridge pickup wasn't enough to bring it back to normal - so I'm going to have to do some serious work on my presets to try and compensate for the mixer/combo setup - or haul my Orange combo around with me!

So, the answer is that someone who primarily plays acoustic-electric can use the "EG CLN" setting on the THR5A to get an acceptable sound when using an electric guitar, without having to spend an extra few hundred quid/dollars on an electric amp. Thanks!

Very informative video, thank you! I've got an Epiphone SG, and bought a Carlsbro Sherwood 20R, and pretty happy with the setup. Cheers.

It sounds awesome with the SG on clean and acoustic amp setting. Pretty nice jazz tone

I have a Laney A-FRESCO, and a vox preamp with cab simulation. I would like to plug my acoustic guitar and my electric guitar to it. The acoustic going straight and electric going into a ts, delay, reverb. Would that make a difference? I mean, trying the cab sim on the preamp and going these effects. Or do you think I need an electric amp no matter what. Thank you in advance!

I have a small bass amp plugged into the sub in back of my my Rolald AC 60. It divides the frequencies and sounds bigger fuller, makes my Moore drum pedal sound real. I thought a electric guitar going through an amp modeler might work, because I have lower frequency support. An acoustic amp is very much like a P.A. The vocals usually sound pretty good with an acoustic amp.

I use a Boss live acoustic amp(also have a bunch of electric guitar amps) and have used it live and jams. I guess I don’t go for the traditional tone because I enjoy it although I am using a pedal board. I guess I like it because it is so clean and can really build my tone how I want with out the issues of some of my tube amps

My guitars are in drop-d/drop-E (rock/metal guitarist) i used to use a big acoustic tube amp i restored when i was a teen, though i don't own an overdrive pedal i had a bit of distortion by just messing with settings (high/low ballanced towards low and mid at normal) it didn't sound all too bad and it didn't have an electric setting. A little fizz never been too much for me personally though

I run a SD-1 (drive all the way down) into the acoustic setting on a Katana MII with mild over drive (green boost on). I think this sounds great with my Strat.

i actually like the sound of the amp as acoustic more than as electric. it was amazing on the SG.

Thank you for this video.
I just got a Yamaha SLG200s and was looking at getting this amp but was confused on if this would be a good option.

I wonder if a ts9 with the drive almost on 0 and tone rolled back at least halfway would lend itself to a tasty dynamically overdriven sound depending on picking attack on that acoustic setting.

My Epiphone 339 plays great through my vip1 amp in acoustic mode. I accidentally forgot to load it on the trailer but I can't wait to hear it through my spark amp. My Epiphone LP Muse sounds good through my acostasonic 20 Watt amp and my VIP1 better than the spark amp because it has the chamberd body. Believe it or not my VIP1 sounds better in someways than the spark.

How much less compression is there wheb you use it as an acoustic amp? Im wondering about getting my S-style to have the *microdynamics* of acoustic play when I want to get real soft but still *sound* kind of like a strat.

Thank you so much. Very thoughtful presentation. Addressed most common scenarios.

Well, I have a strong feeling that Amp Simulator pedal can cure that overdrive sound through acoustic amp...
