MrShortGame - love your videos. The one about slicing and hooking chips, reading downhill putts backwards, and now this. Very unconventional and creative. Golf is a game of infinite possibilities and approaches, and you are proving that with each tutorial. Bravo!

Matt I watch many golf channels, yours is one of the best instructional channels out there. Keep it up buddy, nice work.

Great advice for amateurs! People that don't know how to use bounce are told to hit the ball first and they end up skulling it. Kudos.

Matt, you're the average golfer's instructor.  I really appreciate your teaching approach!

Great stuff. With 2-3 inches margin for error I’ll build confidence.

oh man, your are my saviour! Chipping from tight lies scares the hell out of me, especially for short distances

MrShortGame I would love for you to do a video on foot placement for the shots. Like off of the front foot, back foot, etc.... I watch your videos all the time but I never hear you say how your feet should line up.

I did try this once and was shocked that the chip was just fine it didn't go as far but it certainly did not blade. Takes the worry out of hitting the shot fat.

I don't think I can be a pro but I can't wait to show this off to my friends! Thanks!

Great tip. Do you use this method in taller grass and how far back from the green would you feel comfortable in using this method? Keep up the good work.

matt great video! i'm concerned when the ground is hard, won't a fat shot result in the club bouncing off it, then skulling the ball with the leading edge? i thought using lots of bounce is good for fluffy lies?

I think MrShortGame is leaving out the most important part in regards to bounce which is how hard or soft the turf is. Soft turf will allow you to slide the club under the ball while the bounce keeps the club from digging in. Hard turf combined with high bounce won't allow the club to get under the ball resulting in a bladed shot. If you have hard turf, I think you're better off with a low bounce club and going with the Mickelson hinge and hold technique. I'm guessing MrShortGame plays at really nice courses that are well maintained with soft turf so he doesn't usually encounter tight lies that he can't slide a club under.

Do you control the shot with the right hand?

For me, if I try this, the sole of the club hits the ground behind the ball, then bounces off the (hard) tight lie and I skull the ball with the club edge. I don't see how to prevent this...

Bounce angle is mainly for bunker play, no good golfer would hit that shot, so why practice it. They would play a 9 iron and roll it up. If anything that shot you are practicing would result in a chunk if you are playing so far behind the ball. On a tight lie there is no need to come in steep because there is no grass behind the ball. This type of shot is to be played from thick rough around the greens but even then a 50 deg wedge isn't the right club either unless the runout is more than your chip distance. As a genral rule of thumb a fast green and a flat roll will give you 50% chip 50% roll using a 56 deg wedge from the rough with no bite. Also I am not sure why you even need 12 deg bounce on a 50 wedge. 8 degrees is enough unless that is you are playing lots of links golf?

My go to is a stand closer, stand up the shaft more vertical, present the toe portion of the bounce, use a putting stroke....prevents digging from all lies.
