Why I DIDN'T... Pathology

Pathology is an awesome specialty. As far as medical specialties go, the lifestyle of a pathologist is usually pretty good. In addition, you don't have to deal with difficult patients, you get to interact with your colleagues, and you get to spend all day solving puzzles. That being said, it wasn't for me. Choosing a specialty is one of the most important decisions you make during medical school and everyone has their own reasons for choosing the specialty that they do. Here's what I liked about pathology, what I didn't like, and why I ultimately chose to specialize in plastic surgery instead.

I noticed in med school, I'd be most excited reading the aetiology, pathogenesis, signs and complications part of each disease but by the time I got to management and treatment my mind would wander. I love people, but working through med school in retail, I do not want to actually deal with the worst of people in their most dire times. I think pathology is a good fit, only thing is I hate autopsies.

This series is not useless! We appreciate your insights, experience and advice on choosing (or not choosing) a medical specialty... I feel like I'm listening to a wise friend.

I am a hopeless introvert that has next to no social skills. On top of that, I love my free time a bit too much, so that is something I can't sacrifice for the job.

Lastly, a lot of my colleagues think that I seem like I was made for pathology. Sooo, since pathologists are in short supply in my country (Serbia), I will not have to compete with a lot of people.

Oh, I almost forgot... As a pathologist, I will be able to play Death Metal in the office, as well while performing autopsies. This is the biggest plus for me.

This series is so useful! I'm a non-traditional career changer (RN) and I'm heavily considering pathology. This is the exact video I was looking for to hear other's opinion

In Canada anesthesiologists have pre op clinics to clear patients for surgery and plan the anesthetic plan. It's so popular, at my local hospital they hired a quadriplegic anesthesiologist to do pre op clinic 4 days a week. Patients have to hold the stethoscope for him, but he can dictate his assessment, and order blood work and any necessary imaging. Nice to see his colleagues supporting him working after a terrible accident.

The no patients shenanigans part when you talked about patients and drug seeking behaviour I just got flashbacks from a few days back when I had a patient in a very inappropriate hour faking pain for drugs and the funny part is we dont have opiates in our clinic

Sounds like I’ll get to diagnose and work on curing cancer while hitting the race track every weekend. I’ve found my future specialty!

"I loved my pre-clinical years and my surgical rotation"

Weird. Those are the two things I loathed the most. I'd rather jump off the hospital roof than do another surgery rotation.

Good overview! Thanks. Most of what you said is dead on, but do disagree about the "No Adrenaline" part.. Frozen sections can be very intense.

According to Medscape Compensation Report for 2022, the average salary for a Pathologist is $334K + an incentive bonus of $54K for a total of $388K a year. With over 22 specialties, Pathology offers a huge opportunity for living a great lifestyle. Even most Physicians do not realize all the opportunities available in this broad field. DermPath, GI Path and CytoPath are in very high demand and come with nice pay upgrades. Pathologists are in the top 10 for "feeling fairly compensated" Sounds like a great 9 - 5 gig to me 🙂

as someone who is going for pathology this was a really good video. It's crazy how people's 'dislikes' about the specialty are the things I love most about it.
