"Hurricane" from the musical HAMILTON
Performed by Alex Lacamoire, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton
Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda

[HAMILTON]
In the eye of a hurricane
There is quiet
For just a moment
A yellow sky

When I was seventeen a hurricane
Destroyed my town
I didn’t drown
I couldn’t seem to die

I wrote my way out
Wrote everything down far as I could see
I wrote my way out
I looked up and the town had its eyes on me

They passed a plate around
Total strangers
Moved to kindness by my story
Raised enough for me to book passage on a
Ship that was New York bound…

I wrote my way out of hell
I wrote my way to revolution
I was louder than the crack in the bell
I wrote Eliza love letters until she fell
I wrote about The Constitution and defended it well
And in the face of ignorance and resistance
I wrote financial systems into existence
And when my prayers to God were met with indifference
I picked up a pen, I wrote my own deliverance

In the eye of a hurricane
There is quiet
For just a moment
A yellow sky

I was twelve when my mother died
She was holding me
We were sick and she was holding me
I couldn’t seem to die

[BURR]
Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it…

[HAMILTON]
I’ll write my way out…

[BURR AND ENSEMBLE]
Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it…

[HAMILTON]
Write ev’rything down, far as I can see…

[BURR AND ENSEMBLE & WASHINGTON/ELIZA/ANGELICA/MARIA]
Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait…
(History has its eyes on you)

[HAMILTON]
I’ll write my way out…
Overwhelm them with honesty
This is the eye of the hurricane, this is the only
Way I can protect my legacy…

[COMPANY (EXCEPT HAMILTON)]
Wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait…

Aaron’s foreshadowing “Wait For It” being accompanied by Alex’s explanation how he was “unable to die” in the Caribbean after a sickness hit his mother and him sends literally chills down my spine. Well played, Lin.

I love how the "Wait for it" timing can mean either of two things:
1. Burr's Wait for it after Hamilton says he couldnt seem to die- foreshadowing that Hamilton's life will soon come to an end and Burr will have something to do with it.

2. That if Hamilton just took Burr's advice to "Talk less, smile more" and "Wait for it" then the rumors wouldve passed and he wouldnt have to be exposed publicly as a cheater. But ofc Hamilton did not take Burr's advice and we know what happened next

I love how at 2:06 there is a "history was its eyes on you" in the backgorund because I feel like it's like a warning, that his choice to publish the Reynolds Pamphlet will impact greatly in his life, and in all of the country, and how that event would go down in *history*

I find this one very underrated. It’s beautifully written and sung, yet it has much less views, likes and comments compared to the other songs.

man, comparing the vibrato here to cheering for me now shows the huge evolution of lin's voice

Ah, my favorite underrated song of Hamilton. Right next to Your Obedient Servant, Washington on Your Side, and most of the second act songs.
I remember talking to my friend a couple months ago when this song "clicked" for me. I've been listened to this musical with my friend for a few years now and she LOVED this song -- it was her favorite. I didn't see why, and always said "but every Hamilton song is Hamilton's solo" I didn't realize until recently that this is HIS solo, if that makes sense. As my wise friend once said she loved this song because it was the only song were Hamilton was truly vulnerable and himself. He's not at his most with Angelica, with his squad, bickering with Jefferson or Madison, or even with Eliza, but with his writings. And I couldn't agree more with her. This song is often looked over but the symbolism bro -- this is the calm before the storm, the eye of the hurricane. This is when the musical is thrown up and drifting in midair, right before pummeting down with full-force in the next song and for the rest of the play.

Any who, I'll shut up bye bye now:>

the melody on Hurricane is so goddamn beautiful the story it paints is so inspiring, it invokes such emotion and an unmistakable sense of determination… and the foreshadowing is so smart… Lin is truly a genius <3

This song goes hard until you realize he's comparing getting caught cheating on his wife to half the people he knew drowning and his mom dying in his arms.
