The History Of Reworks That FAILED In League Of Legends

Throughout League's entire history, many champions were reworked or reimagined to have a more healthy, modernized, and engaging playstyle. For the most part, the majority of them have turned out for the better, but there were a few that turned out so bad that they actually had to get REVERTED (or in some cases reworked again). Today we'll be going through some of League's Failed Reworks!

Vars you made a slight error about the attack speed cap. Jinx had her attack speed cap removed during her passive way before belveth was even conceptualized as a champ.

Please Vars I beg you, if the Aurelion Sol rework goes through don't delete your "why no one plays Aurelion Sol"

I think Yone should be reverted to his pre-release state.

Reworked Leblanc's damage was ridiculous when you could apply it, but let's not also forget how the 1.5 sec activation time on Sigil of Malice also often meant that past mid game, you'd get shredded before having a chance to proc it.
She was legitimately the worst assassin at killing [not underfed] Marksmen at this time. Truly was a weird rework.

As an A. Sol player, I had lived with the reworks and the nerfs. I hated them but I still had the A. Sol that I loved playing since his release. Now with the CGU I've realized that nothing like him will exist in league again.

It's funny how you can see an Aurelion Sol in every in-game footage Vars could find about each champion's rework.

Don’t forget, Kog’Maw’s rework didn’t just tweak his W. His R changes severely gimped the AP build’s viability by locking away his highest range ability for targets above half HP essentially.

What you forgot to mention is that Leblanc's rework was played gunblade during that time. She'd get back half of her health while one shotting a wave. This made her one of the best side laners. She'd come in, clear the full wave in a sec and look for flanks

i miss the "old" leblanc so much, it was the most fun i had with league in 9 years of playing it, her late game was literally trash, but it was so fun i didn't care at all

I actually started playing leblanc during her rework. I fell in love with her play style and when they reverted it I was nervous I would lose the enjoyment from my main but to this day she remains my most played champ.

I don't know why Riot never made ASol's W a toggle again, a lot of people told me that's why they stopped playing him. Also Riot removing his orbiting stars seems like blasphemy

Turret'Maw was so fun to play when it was there, I loved it and was really sad to see it go.

You totally forgot Khazix ult rework! They changed it from tripple cast to turning invisible upon entering a bush, which made evolve ult ganking much more effective as you enter the lane invisible and still had ult.

The change Singed need :
1) His poison apply healing reduction ;
2) His ult gives percentage max health damage.
Singed was designed to be an anti-carry but nowadays, with all the mobility, all the healing and stuff, he is most of the time useless.
Re-casting him as an anti-healing champ would allow him to be useful again (just like Vex is designed to be an anti-mobility mage). The percentage max-health damage of his ult would help him to deal with the tank toplaners.

That R+R clone spawn combo was good actually on Leblanc. I would still want it in the game 😁

I miss utility Garen. A point and click silence and armor shred meant that he could go in, mark a target, and then his team could follow up. That version was far healthier than the current version where you have to invest into damage items and just stack move speed because for some reason the utility tank needed damage stats to be tied to their utility.

Malzahar I feel is a champion that would be better reverted to his pre season 6 self, his passive has eaten so much of his power budget and exaggerates the "R-bot" stigma he's had for ages, he has lost base stats(most importantly 50 auto range and 5 ms), damage, voidlings existing, and an entire ability(a really cool one too) all to keep that damn passive. His R is actually a pretty fair ability most of the time, being the only cc spell in the game to cc himself but because of the spellshield the usual counterplay of interrupting the r ceases to exist because now you have to delay that cc and by then his target is dead. The only thing I'd think would be worth to keep from old Malz is the e refresh minigame, that was cool, the current q silence duration is also significantly fairer but as of now Malzahar's kit has been reduced from a strong DOT mage with zone control that could singlehandedly win sieges to.. get bullied early game, wave clear spam at LC, press r. All to keep the spellshield.

Kog'Maw was reworked to have 5.0 max Attack Speed with W active (alongside differently designed W system). They ended up reverting him less than a season later because him having such high attack speed with stacked oh hit effects like Guinsoo's, Runaan's, BotRK, old Wit's End, and Sated Devourer.

I think the Kog'Maw rework is in an incredibly interesting spot. On the one hand, like you mention, Riot hardly ever reverts anything and them doing so is overtly admitting that the change in question was a mistake. However, with the new champion rework polls, Kog'Maw was listed as an option in the most recent one, and the short blurb they had about Kog'Maw's potential rework should he win the poll was the SAME DAMN THING AS HIS REVERTED REWORK. They were like "we would want to focus his design as the premier "protect the puppy" adc, and his artillery mage playstyle may fall to the wayside". I am paraphrasing here but that was the jist. As an AP Kog'Maw player I am obviously extremely biased against the "protect the puppy" role that Kog'Maw has, but the vision they described in the rework poll was exactly the same changes they made to him in his scrapped rework, which I find incredibly bizzare. I also feel like, with how few dedicated artillery mages there are in the game and how MANY hyper-scaling carries we have, that AP Kog'Maw is simply the healthier design both for the game in a vacuum and for champion diversity compared to the rest of the cast. Like seriously, Xerath, Kog'Maw, Vel'Koz, maybe Lux? Vex WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ARTILLERY MAGE and they apparently scrapped that version of her kit entirely, are we really going to remove ~20% of an entire classes champion pool just to make the same terrible changes that already got reverted?

Probably...
