Rings do create a reasonable amount of energy for sonic to run. If you believe the Comic books, an "Infinite Amount of Energy" enough for Amy to actually age herself two years.

Also, my personal hypothesis is that Sonic is denser than you'd expect, answering both why his bones don't break, and why it's Physically IMPOSSIBLE (Sonic X episode 1) for him to swim.

The power rings are a main explanation for the calorie burn. His body converts the power of the power rings to take the place of calories. Later on Chaos energy takes the place of the need for power rings.

The old comics explain this a bit, that is why at first he always needed power rings, and later on he didn't need them at all.

As far as the heat thing I seem to recall in one of the comics or in the cartoon he used to burn through pairs of shoes so he had to get like a special kind of shoe. I was a huge Sonic fan. I think also part of the problem is that he has really thin legs but really big feet. Just like the Codename: Kids Next Door characters.

Absolutely love this kind of vid!  Science mixed with a bit of fun, is just perfect.  I also believe the guy in the vid is rather clever.

The one thing that i would like for you to look a little more into is the existence of power rings, which are the names of the rings that sonic collects during each "stage". these rings have been known to give enough energy to power whole planets in the sonic universe and are designed to provide little to no feedback. This is most interesting since to battle your theory of how much energy sonic uses, if we estimate that each power ring can power a planet, and it is estimated that sonic on average in a stage collects 250-500 power rings a "stage" that sonic is having or obtaining more than enough energy to sustain his energy consumption and compensate for drag, which also seems to apply to chaos emeralds, which put out 10x more energy than the big bang or akashic field theory. Which would explain why sonic can achieve the speed of light as well as exceed it in super sonic form. all in all it is quite awesome to me, that the game designer for the sonic games, has most likely accidentally or sub consciously accounted for these scientific facts and made a video game character that seemingly defies logic and physics actually have a logical conclusion that alines with reality. In other words, i think its cool that sonic doesn't actually defy  the laws of physics do to his environment, body type, and existence as objects that generate high amounts of energy :D
