In this video, we sit down with a remarkable 92-year-old woman from Johnson County, Tennessee, who shares her unique musical journey from the Great Depression to the present day. Growing up, she had a strong dislike for old-time and bluegrass music, a sentiment that persisted well into her adult life. However, everything changed when she encountered the music of the Carter Family, a pivotal moment that sparked a deep and abiding love for traditional bluegrass.

Her newfound passion led her to dedicate herself to preserving and promoting the bluegrass music scene in Johnson County. Through her efforts, she played a key role in establishing the Long Journey Home festival, an annual celebration of the region’s rich musical heritage.

Join us as she recounts her early musical influences, her transformative experience with the Carter Family's music, and her tireless work to ensure that bluegrass music continues to thrive in her community.

My maternal grandfather worked with her father on the WPA projects in the Backbone Rock Area. She was a great teacher at the high school. I'm proud of our Bluegrass Music Heritage in NE TN and SW VA.
