One of my favorite bands growing up was One Eyed Doll. They were originally a duo, the guitarist/singer and drummer. Then they got a third who became the drummer, the old drummer became the bass player, then the bass player left leaving them a duo until the stopped making music

Slomatics. They’re absolutely heavy but they don’t have a bass player. However they play in Slomatics tuning with involves tuning the low string to a low F#.

On the flip side- bands with a drummer vocals and bass, Death from Above 1979, and Awesome Snakes from the two person band of the two members from "The Soviettes" band

You need to do a short on Squarepusher. Bass player without a band (mostly). Insane virtuoso

Hey, Ray Manzarek was an awesome bassist, even if he was playing it all with his left hand on a keyboard.

And, as others have noted, the Doors did use bassists when recording in the studio.

There just wasn't a permanent bassist in the band and when they played live, because Manzarek's left hand was just so good at playing bass, it made having an actual bassist in the band redundant.

But the studio recordings do have real bass on them, from session bassists.

I saw a band at a local amusement park. three horns, guitar, drums, percussion, keys, 12 dancers (6 couples). Covering JLo, Shakira, Miami Sound Machine tunes. NO BASS PLAYER! There was a Hartke amp up there but I realized they had the bass loop off the keyboard running through that. Bass is such a fundamental element of that style and they still went without.

When I saw Bruce Cockburn about 15 years ago he had a drummer and a violinist but no bass. Although it was a great show I would have preferred to see a bass player there as well.

From Entertainment onwards Sleater Kinney had bass in recording btw

I saw Buckethead a few weeks ago. He had no bassist. There was bass, but it was a backing track he was playing over.
I had a blast, but it was rather strange.

I’d say My Chemical Romance. They have a bassist yeah, and I love their music but you can’t ever really tell that there’s bass in their songs
