On March 9th, 2018, the US Air Force officially retires Predator, a platform that initiated a new era of unmanned air combat.
Predator were best known for their ability to deliver precision strikes as their controllers sat halfway around the world in small and discreet bunkers. The decision to pull the MQ1 Predator fleet is a preplanned , but its legacy will carry on in the form of its bigger brother, the MQ-9 Reaper, an aircraft that will become the mainstay of US Air Force drone operations.

In this video, Defense Updates lists TOP 5 IMPROVEMENTS IN MQ 9 REAPER WHEN COMPARED TO MQ 1 PREDATOR DRONES

As far as I have seen, your videos are very informative, professionally produced and provide a wide array and in depth look at many of the pertinent weapons on the battlefields that unfold before us each day. Thanks for your efforts keeping us informed. Excellent works !

They actually mounted AIM-9X on Predator during the lead up to OIF, there's now declassified video/pictures of it engaging an Iraqi Mig 25. Now the drone was shot down obviously, Mig 25 is way faster and has a much further engagement range, but it proved to the Iraqis that the drones were not defenseless and they ceased attacking them. Reaper should be much better equipped for such a threat, but we'll have to see what the other major powers have in the works, air-to-air drones are going to be the next big thing in air-superiority.

My name is Lewis Robert Burton Jr! And I go to the Thomasville Georgia pines mental health dept!
I seen a drone like this about a 100 yards off the ground flying over Thomasville Georgia Northside mental
health hospital in 2015 and it was about to fly over my head to.I also saw an angel flying in front of my car on Oriole Drive in
front of Esther Reagan's house 8 months before this encounter.

The name's an improvement too.
Reaper sounds way cooler than predator which is not a dumb name by any means.

Thanks for not having a computer generated voice reading off a wikipedia page

If they add air to air missiles to the reaper, how will it identify targets?

Sensors to pick up targeting radar surely would not add a lot to the cost, weight and would allow remote pilots to know when they have a fighter of ground to air launcher painting the Reaper.

Where are the Russian or Chinese trolls?

If the MQ-9 Reaper is going to very soon be equipped with air-to-air missiles, it will, no doubt, also have much better situational awareness. Having air-to-air missiles will certainly give those Russian pilots who like to trail Reapers in flight something to think about. But the MQ-9 Reaper IS NOT a stealth aircraft, and therefore would not be expected to survive in contested airspace. But given its capabilities, the MQ-9 Reaper is every bit as potent as most manned jet fighters. Each Reaper costs about $17 Million.

The not talked about Northrop Grumman RQ-180, which is flying around the world undetected, almost certainly has weapons capability. So too does the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk and its naval version, the MQ-4C Triton, which have 2, 000 lb. payloads. Each RQ-4 costs $228 Million, which is certainly more than the cost of any other known aircraft currently in production.

And those are just the UAVs/drones whose existences has been made public. There are Black Project UAVs/drones in operation that it will be many years, if at all, that the public is told that they exist. A DARPA management official disclosed that there are also manned Black Projects aircraft currently in service. Aurora?

If it has a 24 hour endurance it can probably go 2600 miles at 110mph give or take. I wonder if the range is considered with X hours on station.

It needs to be able to carry more munitions.
