Some in the workplace are making the mistake using the wrong approach when the question is a causal one. A background in econometrics can help. Experiments are the "gold standard" to find cause and effect. I have used it myself to evaluate marketing intervention. Or when random assignment is not feasible, you have to find clever ways using obs data methods like diff in diff, IV, regress discontinuity... to find causal effect. Econometrics comes in!

Data in the real world sucks and econometrics is rarely used unless it’s a really niche consultancy. McKinsey et al rely on simple data analysis
