“People think of animation only doing things where people are dancing around and doing a lot of histrionics, but animation is not a genre. And people keep saying, ‘The animation genre.’ It’s not a genre! A Western is a genre! Animation is an art form, and it can do any genre. You know, it can do a detective film, a cowboy film, a horror film, an R-rated film or a kids’ fairy tale. But it doesn’t do one thing. And, next time I hear, ‘What’s it like working in the animation genre?’ I’m going to punch that person!”

I hate the term “it’s for kids”. People seem to forget that just because something is aimed at a younger audience doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it.

Animations should be for everyone, not just kids, adults, or teens.

It should be for all of them.

"Animation is for kids and we have to hear their songs all day long!"

And then they proceed to sing "we don't talk about Bruno " 🙄

Oscars: “Animation is for kids.”

Animators: “People die in Attack on Titan like it’s going out of style.”

I love how it went from mature topics to graphic violence to *the entire anime industry*

You can even count kids making animations as not-necessarily kid friendly.

I appreciate how you mostly used actually mature cartoons for your point instead of just adult animated comedies.

Fritz the Cat was one of the earliest X rated animated films. That came out in 1972. We've had adult animation since the 70s, and they still pass the medium as just for kids. The Oscars are a complete joke.

Edit: There, I fixed it. Now stop correcting me. lol

I'm sorry, but Prince of Egypt deserves an Oscar.
And it'd not just for kids, adults can watch it greatly. It's one of my favorites

And then a year later del Toro went onto the podium and gave everyone a very deserved clap-back

I'm actually impressed. It takes an elaborate effort to be that much out of fashion. And the Oscars consistently never fail to disappoint in that regard.

Even with animated shows that kids CAN watch, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the only, or even the primary, target demographic. For example, people often describe SpongeBob as a “kids show, ” and I imagine that’s the target demographic Nickelodeon executives were going for. However, I think the writers, at least for the first three seasons, were aiming to make a show for all ages—a demographic people often mistake as “for kids.” Meanwhile, people with this mindset won’t watch SpongeBob and miss out on one of the most genuinely funny comedies of all time just because it’s drawn instead of live-acted.

I remember that time I watched re zero and there was a scene where Rem literally got twisted apart, her neck literally turning 180 degrees as she coughed up blood and slowly died, as well as Subaru dying in multiple brutal ways including getting poisoned to death, disembowelled multiple times, falling on spikes, getting eaten alive by rabbits, getting his throat slit etc.

Animation is for kids amirite oscars??

Fun Fact: When Ralph Bakshi was producing and advertising Fritz the Cat in Hollywood, there were people that were sending out warnings not to see this X-rated film (that is the actual rating, it's now known as NC-17) as it did not fit their criteria for what animation should be. To everyone's suprise, the film was a massive success. This was the early days of adult animation and Hollywood's attitude as either not changed or worsened.

The argument doesn't even make sense, either. "Adults aren't allowed to enjoy cartoons because it wasn't made for them." So we're just gonna casually forget that adults are the ones who MAKE these cartoons and do so because they love the medium and want to share their creations with everyone? Okay then... >.>

"Animation is for kids!" has the same energy as "It has a lot of violence in it, so it's definitely for adults!"
