Phyrgian Dominant - How To Master This Powerful Scale

Показать описание
In today's video we explore the phrygian dominant scale. This special scale is actually a mode of the harmonic minor scale. It's a great scale to use when you want to improvise over altered chords and altered harmony.
Like it's cousin the phrygian mode, this scale is a blend of different combinations of whole steps and half steps.
One of the things I like to do is relate any new scale I learn to the major scale. It provides a great point of reference. So, if we compare the phrygian dominant to the major scale than the scale degrees for phrygian dominant would be as follow:
1, b9, 3, 4, 5, b13, b7.
I like to think of the 2nd scale degree as a b9 as opposed to a b2 but you can think of it either way. The same goes for the b13. I like to think of the 6th note as a b13 as opposed to a b6. But, feel free to think of it anyway you want. It really comes down to whatever you can instantly think of in your mind.
Music theory is really a tool for organization and shortcuts so you can free up your creativity. So, go with whatever is easiest for you.
