Being a game developer is tough. I started out as a game developer, but quickly changed towards web development, here is why. Reason one is payment. Game studios pay very poorly compared to the rest of the industry, plus the work you are doing is generally a lot harder than a regular programming job. Contracts are often only given out on a yearly or maybe a project basis if you are lucky. So reason two is very poor job security. Reason number three is work life balance. You will work a lot. You will do unpaid overtime all the time. Often gaming companies are also very outdated when it comes to their work culture, meaning that things like full remote work or even partially remote work, are still rare. There is often no time to polish your code. There are deadlines all the time and everything needs to move forward as quickly as possible. That takes away the chance to revisit old code, refactor it, make it better etc.. On top of that you are working with a lot of people who have poor or no technical expertise and don't understand how important a clean code foundation is. And, on a personal note, it can take away your fun in gaming. Seeing how rotten that industry is, pushed me away from gaming for quite a while. Only after quitting game development and starting a "normal" programming carreer, allowed me to go back to my favorite hobby. So, my advice is, unless you are super young and have no responsibilities, like a family to take care of, or this is the absolute only thing you can see yourself doing as a carreer, stay far away from anything related to game development.

Being a "full stack" game developer is a long haul. Its not just coding, its making game ready game assets. You need to learn what good topology is, how to minimise the vertex count. Then you need to learn to texture. You need to learn about character rigging and animating. Then you need to learn how to import everything into your game engine, create materials, animation controllers, input controllers etc etc. Expect a minimum of 5 years to get competent.

I've talked with people hired by game companies, they were supposed to work extra Saturday without pay! I also talked with a guy who said they had what sounded like an obligatory book club in a big game company - they were studying Clean Code and Dependency Injection books, probably also in their spare-time without pay!

I had been an independent developer for a few years now; I automated a clinic process (python + sql + excel, yup excel) I made a few java desktop apps and a Ionic mobile app (ts) I have been getting into game dev because I enjoy the math and the process of crafting something; Game dev is not fun if you do not like math and learning bare c; also you need to learn art; how to color stuff; 3d modelling; the whole project as a game is hard because its not only programming/coding

Id not advise anyone to be working for a AAA studio, you would do ok your own with your indie projects and you will be far better off in the end

Great points! Getting started with a bootcamp in Software Engineering, though most of my big ideas are within the game dev realm.

The same argument could be made for web because it's by far the most common and almost every tutorial is focused on it. Bottom line, go for what interests you the most and strive for excellence.

Supply and demand is so volatile and you can't decide your way based on only that and it may change at any time.
Do what you love then money will follow. You're a developer be it game dev or regular software dev, u'll always earn more than most of the people and live comfortably.
If you consider game dev is not for you, u can always get jobs from high reputable "regular" companies as a VR or simulator developer and it's one of the most paying jobs in the world.

My dad was a cobalt dev, just retired and they had a hard time finding new devs. Good job security but not that fun

I looked at COBOL a few years back because I also heard about OG COBOL coders retiring. I ran into the problem where I had to pay IBM to use actual mainframes to execute my code. I looked (and asked) around but couldn't find a way around this requirement. This may not be the problem now, but I wish there was a way around this requirement. Who knows, maybe that job interview I had last year would have gone better?

I would advise people stay away from Game development,
I know 2 people who worked for Activision and they always on Crunch working ridiculous hours.
They left Activision then they joined some Indie game Company and there also working long hours.

They switched careers and now both working On the Cloud
and the pay is just as good without all the stress and they are able to actually see their families.

Game dev is just a trap for young people. You work more and harder, while often earn less money. Also, the management might do bad decissions and you get the hate for it.

Poor game developers are the more exploited developers out there. They have a huge attrition rate sustained only because they're passionate and love the field and stay there because of the cool factor.

Game Development is a fucking scam
You're better off working for mercedes at the factory in Stuttgart

The only good thing about it is that you can transition to other fields
