So, the estate agency Purple Bricks sets out to sell a cottage in the lovely Welsh village of Morfa Nefyn in Gwynedd as a holiday home. And instead of using their traditional purple advertising board, they used their new union flag and lion design in support of the GB Olympic Team.

You can't blame the Welsh for being priced out of their communities, we have exactly the same thing in the south West, empty houses by the coast for nine months of the year, pricing local people out.

I'm not surprised they're pissed off but this is happening all over the UK right now.

This happens all over the rural UK not just in wales.
There use to be an old saying in the 1980s, " Come home to a real fire, buy a cottage in Wales"

It’s been happening in Cornwall and Devon since the 1970’s with identical arguments being raised - nothing was done to help locals afford to live there.

This is occurring throughout the UK, not just Wales.

Nothing new the outsiders moving in to rural locations and pushing the property prices beyond the local's pockets has been going on for years. The current pandemic has just accelerated the situation. 😭🇬🇧

I live in the Cotswolds, similar problem, I sympathize.

Not just in Wales. Its been happening all over rural England too for years, but as usual no ever has a problem when England is involved.

This is a great report and spot on, I’ve not seen anyone else pickup on this. I’m originally from Pembrokeshire and moved away so I could earn with the hopes of earning enough to buy my own home in the place I grew up but there is no way that I can keep up with the ever rising house prices. I’ve literally been out prices of my own country, and while I’m pro union I’d by lying if I said it didn’t cause a bitter taste in my mouth...

The same has been happening to English seaside towns for years where the Wealthy have bought holiday homes and pricing the locals out of the market.

It’s not about the flag at all; it’s the local unrest with second home owners, mostly from London and the SE of England. It is a problem in all the beauty spots in the UK, from Cornwall to the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District to the Cotswolds

I live in Gwynedd and you are absolutely correct in your your analysis

I remember Not the Nine O'clock News did a skit on the cold fire advert saying.... " Come home to a real fire Buy a House in Wales ;-)" Second homes should not be allowed as has killed a few communities :-(

Well said Jeff. I'm English but I fully appreciate the dilemma that the Welsh people have when incomes to property prices and their will to I've in the communities that the love and grew up in.
The same is happening to a lesser extent in East Anglia the I reside and may become equally unfair in time.
I'm told there is a two stream housing market on the Island of Guernsey. I'm not sure precisely how this works but from what I have heard from friends in Guernsey it may have come some way in combatting the problem.
There must be a solution to this problem, and quickly at that.
As fr the Union Flag I do not believe tat this should become the focus of the debate. I have always believed that Union is stronger that the separate parts.

Not just Wales. Same in Shropshire and other English counties.

A very sensible video Jeff. Sensitively handled. Well done indeed. Wales is in no rush to split from the union but that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

I know Morfa Nefyn or Nevin as it was spelled in the 1950s. It's beautiful. Another aspect to this upset is that this part of Wales is 100% Welsh-speaking - kids learn English at school, not before - so an influx of rich English risks dilution of something they hold very dear. As English born and bred, although one eighth Welsh on my mother's side, I sympathise with the locals. Second home-owners blight a lot of communities across the U.K.

I'm not Welsh but from the North...I agree with the Welsh 100%. The bigger problem is why the government is still allowing the population to grow through immigration into the UK...how many from HK? We are out of the EU now so should be in charge of migration...no excuse. We have a finite amount of land and resources....water, energy etc. Where are all these people to live? We are being asked to squeeze more people into towns and cities....building on parks and playing fields...and at the same time being told we have no where to park cars...buy a bike they say...I
