It took me a long time to realize that the archetypal "wizard" or "mage" in so many fantasy settings, living in their tower of tomes and candles spending years and years of study to master the arcane secrets of the universe, had such an analogous connection to real world mathematicians, physicists, chemists, etc. This is why I love your channel name so much. You are an actual Merlin, happily residing in his metaphorical spire of knowledge surrounded by books and benevolently sharing your knowledge with all the aspiring sorcerers of the world.

Local thrift stores near major universities. Those engineering majors drop off a lot more books than you would think.

There are so many awesome math books on the Internet Archive. Some you can borrow for an hour and some you can read freely. I believe it's a conglomerate of libraries, just amazing.

I find the best time for used books on Amazon is after the Spring Semester when some or returning rented books or re-selling their books. I look for books above acceptable or Good condition. If it is an advanced subject, I will typically purchase new books, unless that ever-so-often-used book comes along. ONE BIG NOTE, I like to buy books that come with solutions manuals.

"Complex Variables" by John W. Dettman is a great read: the first part covers the geometry/topology of the complex space from a Mathematician's perspective, and the second part covers application of complex analysis to differential equations and integral transformations, etc. from a Physicist's perspective.

The springer hardcovers are so tempting to collect. I have the advanced linear algebra one.

I have had good luck using Alibris. The stated condition has always been accurate. In fact, sometimes they are in better than stated condition. Also, the local used book store. I just found a copy of Calculus and Analytic Geometry by Thomas, Third Edition, Second Printing for less than $10 US which I wouldn't have picked up except I saw your video.

Don't forget to look through the Salvation Army and Thrift Stores. They can be pennies on the dollar, are in surprisingly good condition and many of those books will likely be from former students of local colleges and universities. I have found materials from East Carolina, from UNC Wilmington, from local community colleges etc. I have acquired a full plastic tote of books for less than thirty dollars total from a couple runs to various thrift stores and the Salvation Army. I also still have my Sullivan Algebra and Trig book, which was used for College Algebra and pre-calc at Johnston Community College until the fall of 2010.

I bought a lot of my math textbooks at the Goodwill and they were like $3.00 each. A lot of my calculus and statistics textbooks came from my Goodwill where I live. Have a productive day :)

I scour thrift stores, flea markets, and library discard sales. Used bookstores near a college campus are a great source. Sometimes I find a student solution manual and then buy the textbook that goes with it. Some textbooks have a section in the front called "Additional Resources for Students" that gives the ISBN# of the solution manual. I got a job as a math tutor at a local 2 year college and publishers would send me the text that the class was using because I was on the faculty.

The 'go-to' place for acquiring used classic and collectable mathematics books is ... Powell's Bookstore in Portland, OR (which houses books of all kinds in five buildings). It is definitely worth a trip to the Pacific Northwest if you've never been there, but they also conduct online sales.

Yes I have some Dover. Thriftbooks, AbesBooks, Alibris, Book Depository. Elsevier, SpringerLInk, Science Direct are the bigtime publishers but expensive. In between McGraw Hill, Addison Wesley, Harcourt Brace, Schaum.

Your college Library will often sell older outdated math books. I have scored some incredible deals on some awesome books there. Local used book stores, thrift books and ebay.

If you have a St. Vincent dePaul thrift store near you, their used book sections are incredible. I regularly see interesting and useful books there on math (and other subjects that I'm into).

Yes, please do a video on Dover books! 😊

I started collecting books before the internet. Second-hand bookstores were everywhere and (more pertinently) it was nearly impossible for booksellers to check competing price-points at other stores, so you could really get some great deals. Those days are long gone. Sad. One thing I would recommend that is still relevant today is attending academic conferences. Scientific book publishers often set up booths there to flog their latest books at discount prices, and if you get there just before the conference ends, the discounts are even steeper, and very expensive books on display can go for a song (they'd rather not ship or carry unsold books back).

Ive seen ThriftBooks stickers on some of the editions you've featured.

Dover don't ship outside the USA, so you need to buy them via another seller if you are outside the USA.
Abebooks is where I go to, with a fair amount of caution, I always check on other booksellers first.
I have a very old edition of the Lang Algebra. I wonder how many changes there were for the latest version. But yes, it's very slick.

Goodwill warehouse, 5 books for 99 cents. The resellers like the latest editions as they are more valuable. For my personal use I love the older cloth bound math books. It's hit or miss, but I will at least find one great math book everytime I go.

Do a video on all physics books please. Some dover books are not good because of the font such as thermodynamics and statistical mechanics by landsberg.
