When I was a teenager I was preparing to leave school, I wasn't particularly gifted in anything academic so I decided pretty quickly I wanted to join the army. I was always fairly fit and active. My dad was an infantryman and boxed in the army and long after he left the army, he was particularly gifted with fitness, the hardwork didn't hurt either. So when I said I wanted to join the army he started preparing me from the age of 14 to join the infantry. I could apply at 15 to join at 16. We had one goal in mind and that was to pass the selection with flying colours, and breeze through the training from a fitness standpoint. So he put me on a rigorous boxing regime from the age of 14. At the time I was thinking "Why the hell are we doing this? I'm going to be a soldier not a boxer", but laaawd above did I get fit quick. My workouts weren't too disimilar to Mikes, tons of bag work and pad work, jumping rope, 6 mile runs everyday, around 1500 situps and push ups everyday, no rest days. That was for about a year and a half before I even walked through the recruitment door. I piled the muscle on, I was strong as an ox and fast as lighting by the time selection came around, I passed with flying colours. Of course it takes more than good fitness to be a good soldier, but that's certainly half the battle. I never had a good relationship with my dad growing up, he was a difficult man and that was the closest thing to bonding we ever had really and so I cherish the memory of it. I had a good career in the army thereafter and didn't look back. Let me tell you though, I would dread going on leave because I knew my dad was waiting for me at the boxing gym for one of his death sessions as I called them. There isn't much on this earth as well rounded for fitness as boxing, believe me. Real boxers, those guys are spartans.

I started doing similar workouts last year when I couldn’t make it to the gym. I started with 10 push ups every hour, averaging about 40-60 push ups daily the first month but got up to 120 push ups all together. The results kind of shocked me, my back has actually felt reinforced for the last year or so and my upper body strength has increased quite a bit. This year I started adding in other exercises to my micro work outs like sit ups, side crunches, and free weight curls, I’m looking forward to seeing the results!

Tysons Callisthenic routine was;
500 Push-Ups,
500 Shrugs with 30kg,
500 Dips,
1, 000 Sit-Ups.

Don't know where all the other bits came from

Thank you so much sir for getting to the point with this video and not taking your sweet ass time like most people that feel that they have to break the whole entire Mike story down and then barely give you any information on the workout routine

Mike Tyson recommends against doing those wrestler's neck bridges that he used to do. He said he's had pain in the cervical vertebrae for years as a result of doing that exercise in his youth.

There are a few inaccuracies in this video, but definitely a good explanation. He did lift weights for shoulder shrugs. 10 mins of neck bridge exercises, not 30min. 2500 sit ups. 3 mile run. There’s a really good documentary on YouTube. Great video. Well done.

I’ve read Tyson would wake up ass crack in the a.m. for a 3-5 mile jog come home and go back to sleep. 500 push-ups, dips, squats, shrugs, neck bridges, 1000-2000 sit-ups, and 20-30 min jump rope. Also he sparred, pad work, heavy bag work, and he’d throw in pull-ups sometimes.

Hershel Walker claims the same thing. I’m sure they both used weights as the clip clearly shows, but a majority of their training was calisthenics. A lot of boxers and wrestlers stayed away from weights, because they feared it would make them muscle bound. They new intuitively that bodybuilding could hurt the way they performed. Mike was undersized for a heavyweight, but his athleticism and speed was amazing. One of the good things about high endurance calisthenics as the ability to work at it throughout the day. Even though this is not a lot of load, I’m willing to bet that the cumulative time under tension along with volume will yield good results.

I was watching a interview with 8x mr Olympia bodybuilder Lee Haney, and he said he taught Evander hollyfield how to lift weights and gain mass for the evander vs Tyson fight, and he mentioned a lot of bodybuilders have worked with actors and boxers since back in the day, even Franco colombo did a diet and plan for Stallone for Rocky 3 or Rambo don’t remember

It has been said that the muscle earned from calisthenics last longer. If you're doing over 100 reps you need to increase the resistance, not add more reps.
