A look at how Tom Hanks took on the challenging role of Walt Disney.

"Saving Mr. Banks" will be released in UK cinemas nationwide on November 29th, 2013.

Two-time Academy Award®--winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks," inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney's classic "Mary Poppins" made it to the screen.

When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' "Mary Poppins," he made them a promise—one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation.

For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn't budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.

It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Inspired by true events, "Saving Mr. Banks" is the extraordinary, untold story of how Disney's classic "Mary Poppins" made it to the screen—and the testy relationship that the legendary Walt Disney had with author P.L. Travers that almost derailed it.

"Saving Mr. Banks" is directed by John Lee Hancock, produced by Alison Owen, Ian Collie and Philip Steuer, and written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith. Executive producers are Paul Trijbits, Christine Langan, Andrew Mason and Troy Lum.

If I ever worked for Disney someday, my mission would be to make the next Disney Renaissance, where movie that Disney makes is not only a box-office smash but a critically-acclaimed Oscar-winning masterpiece in tradition of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, etc.

In my opinion, Tom Hanks could not have done a better job. Interesting fact, my therapist told me that Walt was actually fired from a newspaper, and get this... it was for not being creative enough. I have a very deep-seated fear of failure, and she used this as an example of how even the most successful people have failed at some point. And considering that I want to be like Walt more than anything, it was encouraging for me to hear that.

That's what I want to be...I want to be a story teller. To restore order with imagination, to instill hope again and again and again...and I will prove it one day...I will follow in Walt Disney's footsteps one day and hope to be half the man he was.

There is this one shot in this feature where the screen is all vague before going to a clear image of Tom walking through Disneyland. At the moment is was vague, and when you couldn't see Tom properly, it really looked for a moment like it was Walt walking there. I think that says a lot about how close Tom comes to the man himself.
