'I' needed liberal arts.
I was hungry for knowledge and discovering the depths of myself as a living human being after high-school. I wanted to learn and grow, not confirm and get a degree 'just because' and get a job that I'm not passionate about. That's what liberal arts gave me, and therefore it worked perfectly with the season in my life. It made me nourish a healthy mindset of learning and also of the self, which will be with me for the entirety of my stay on this one time journey on earth. If a student is going into liberal arts thinking they'll definitely get a job, or to simplify it, if they're only job oriented, liberal arts will feel like a crappy degree to get. However, that does not discount the fact that a liberal arts degree CAN get you a job, but not your 'typical' job. Our professors tell us that a liberal arts degree should make you want to unravel your own way to earn and create a niche that people generally can't see because it isn't obvious.
This degree is for people who are willing to accept an unpredictable future, and dive into curiosity because the season in your life asks for it. You'll only feel anxious and frustrated if you're not up for the so deemed 'follies' that we undertake in liberal arts. For some, they'll unravel the magic that they seek, and for others, they simply won't find the magic because they're looking for it in the wrong place.

I have a liberal arts degree and now a law degree . It’s great if you don’t know what you want to do next in life but gave me great communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate on paper .

I think the point of a liberal arts degree is that a lot of employers just require a generic degree (in literally anything, it doesn't matter what degree you have), and liberal arts is basically the easiest degree to get.

"I'm still trying to figure out what liberal arts is" me too, man, me too

I’m interested in liberal arts not because of the job opportunities, but by how it adapts your mind to different ways of thinking. I have found it difficult to justify to my family and peers why I want to study la, simply because I am not looking to put it in my resume, rather I am looking to use it in my everyday activities. Sadly, I cannot find anything that relates to this. If i had money to spend, I’d do it with no hesitation.

I just wanted to comment that it's been a year since I've been watching your videos, I was lost on what I wanted to do with my future career in terms of the degree. It started from Music to English to communications to business to marketing and finally to accounting and finance. Thank you for consistently posting your videos and shedding the light on the pros and cons of each degree, some of the degrees you discuss are degrees I haven't even heard of this really shows how dedicated and engaged you are with your subscribers. I owe all of this all to you, you changed my perspective on a lot of things including finance.

Wish I’d seen this when I was a college freshman. Getting an MBA now - I’m all on the “hard skills” train. Thanks Shane.

Hey Shane, loving the content man! through your series on liberal art degrees, you've helped me realized the importance of selecting a good major outside of liberal arts from criminal justice and then switching to the idea of law school then releasing the hard struggles after 3 more years of school that I've settled for my interest in money through business economics Thanks Man keep it up!

10 years ago I went to a liberal arts school and I got extremely bored. After studying there for 6 months I left that school and enrolled myself into a bachelor program in physics. After finishing the bachelor I did a master in financial mathematics. Now when look back I realize that leaving the liberal arts school was the best decision in my life.

Short Answer: No
Long Answer: Absolutely not
Very few people can actually utilize a Liberal Arts degree especially just a Bachelor's.

Liberal Art Degrees are worth it if you KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT AND HAVE A PLAN. Networking I find is the most important aspect working with these majors, especially psychology. It would be preferred though, to get a masters or doctorate as it gives more leeway. Certain jobs, for example, a therapist, are higher in demand, especially after Covid-19.

If you do become a professor, that's great. You'll be teaching future teachers who will be teaching the same subject to students wanting to become liberal arts teachers.

As a linguistics graduate, my friends and I are in different fields: from banking, teaching, IT, up to international relations. A foreign language proficiency is really valuable to employers because there are "bilingual jobs" out there that offer higher salaries than their English-only counterparts.

If there is one thing I want traditional degree programs in my field to do is to incorporate technology in our curriculum. Research in NLP or jobs that require skills in python are really in demand right now in case you want to earn a lot.

For me, it just annoys me how some people outside our fields discriminate and judge us for taking this field just because it is not marketable lol. Not everyone wants to study or get a job in your field and the world needs diversity. Great minds in history like Da Vinci are well-versed in the humanities and the sciences and humanities are actually interconnected. In linguistics, we have computational linguistics, forensic linguistics, clinical linguistics, etc. that can be applied in different things. It is just sad that the status quo does not realize the importance of our degrees and is unfair for us to be valued less than our peers despite the skills that we have that are important in this world too. For example, now I am trying to learn computational linguistics but as I see it, it is heavily biased towards formal linguistics and well-documented languages especially English. There are other theories and branches in linguistics that can offer better analyses of certain language phenomena than formal linguistics, but since computational linguistics is very lacking in its linguistics component, no wonder until this day we still cannot fully teach a machine learn human languages as sophisticated as other AI skills. If only linguistic research is more supported and well-funded, we could have better language technologies and be inclusive of other languages besides English.

So, do not go to college at all if it’s not for a stem degree. 😢

The purpose of going to college is to get an education, not get a career. You DO NOT need to college to get a high-paying job and lots of employers do not value college graduates. If you don't care about actually becoming an educated, well-rounded individual, PLEASE, don't go to college. Let the people who actually care about themselves attend. Stop inflating our tuition costs.

Great video! I wish I would’ve chosen CS instead of linguistics, but I’m already a year away from graduating. So instead ill take some CS classes, get a head start in self teaching myself coding, and then do a boot camp. Long term goal is to do computational linguistics so the linguistics degree isn’t that useless haha!

My major is usually art, photography drawing and graphic design. I have no choice but get liberal art degree, dude.

You go to study liberal arts in order to set you mind on a thought journey. Not to get a job. If you are in it to get a job, go instead become a computer programmer.
