How to find the second moment of area of a rectangular shape and how to apply the parallel axis theorem.
The second moment of area (moment of inertia) of a rectangular shape is given as I = (bh^3)/12, however this only applies if you're finding the moment of inertia about the centroid of the rectangle.
The need to apply the parallel axis theorem arises when you are required to find the second moment of area about an axis that is not aligned with the centroid of the element. In this case the formula would be I = (bh^3)/12 + Ad², where A is the area of the shape and d is the distance from the axis to the centroid of the rectangle.
