I got a 3D printer last fall and have been using it for many of the same types of things. One additional suggestion I might offer is, if someone doesn't want to try hooking it up to a Raspberry Pi, you can simply plug the whole thing into an energy monitoring smart plug. That way, you can set up notifications when the power drops back down to it's idling state to let you know when a print has completed.

You can also do mid print layer stops and stick in an NFC sticker to make your own smart objects. Just leave a pocket in the model when designing and tell the slicer to add a pause command at the right layer height. I’ve recently started playing around with this and programming the stickers all on my phone.

Get yourself a raspberry pi zero 2 and put octopi/octoprint on it connect to the 3d printer and you can control Smarthome lights ect when prints are done or errors happen and it can also auto shutdown the printer when jobs complete would be a great investment to your smart home 👍🏻
