You will learn how the school lunch is better in Japan than the US. Schools in Japan have chefs come to campus every morning to prepare everyone’s meal using local ingredients and a ton of vegetables. They prioritize nutritional value and taste over the cost. I agree, the US school system is pretty broken, or at the very least - several decades behind. Would love to see improvements to the food for kids :)

I went to a public high school in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 80's. Our school had the basic crappy food offerings, but it also had a huge salad bar. It was really popular with the students. You could make your own combinations with fresh vegetables, fruits, protein choices (eggs, cheese, fish), and dressings all for $1.50. Sadly the salad bar offering ended in the 90's.

I am now starting to understand why Japanese people have a higher life expectancy. When you have food of this quality everyday obviously you are gonna live to a 100

The food we had at my American high school was probably…not the best. The things that tasted good were super not healthy (like chili cheese fries) and the healthier things didn’t taste as good. We did have a salad bar though (this is as of about 2 years ago). However, there was so many kids buying lunch most of the salad bar was gone by the time you got there.

One of the best things they introduced though at my school was from time to time they’d have the lunch ladies build you a salad like it was Subway. You could choose lettuce or spinach, and they had things like olives and mushrooms you could put on it. I still crave their salad from then.

Food when I was a kid in the U.S. was pretty good. I grew up in the 90s though. The middle school I went to also had Coke products in vending machines, and they sold fried foods too. We would stay in, past recess for seconds sometimes. The only thing that I hated was some of the weird lunch meat sandwiches we got at the end of the year, and on field trips. Breakfast was usually cereal, milk, buttered toast and a fruit. Sometimes we would have breakfast pizza, or we had pancakes. It changed significantly in the mid 2000s to 2010s. High school was great though. Just tons of junk food, but we had a full, self service salad bar.
