She described school lunches after the second world war. My school lunch was a piece of cardboard with cheese they called pizza or a piece of cardboard shoved between 2 deformed buns that they called a burger. To drink we had 2% milk or chocolate. No apple, no raisins, nothing.

In my country, I believe we have something called canteen stalls, where children/teens can buy using their own money. It also has a wide variety, like Malay food, Chinese food, Japanese food etc and a drinks/fruit stall. I remembered when I was in primary school, my go to was fishball noodles soup from the noodles stall. 👍🏻

Catered food like these I believe are only for private/boarding schools? Most schools here are not that.

Everyone whose spent some time in a non charter or non private school knows that the American food one is the fattest lie ever.
When I was in school I became lactose intolerant because of how terrible the milk was, me and several students endured food poisoning basically everyday, a lot of times the milk cartons and milk would be moldy, solid, or frozen, inside or out, and once on chicken sandwhich day someone bit into their sandwhich without looking only to realize the bread was moldy, vomited and caused several others people to vomit too.
Then when my grandfather was in the same school after school segregation ended, the food was even worse, horse flies everywhere falling into their food and the lunch ladies just expected them to eat their slop anyways.
