Dick Dale isnt talked about enough. His rig is pretty insane. Before he died he was still playing shows in a dive bar in florida to pay off his medical bills. He deserves way more respect.

"Nobody could've guessed" that surf rock would result in Black Metal..
It's true.. many iconic black metal guitar riffs is just surf rock, but with distortion.

Misirlou is one of the hardest songs to play RIGHT. The tremolo picking is actually varied with pick weight to give more of a drum sound. Listen to the picking, it’s a rapid percussive beat.

I beg of anyone interested in Surf to check out The Astronuats and their tune "The Hearse" as it is greatest reverb tone recorded. Other bands: The Pyramids, The Challengers, and the comp "Lost Legends of Surf"

The use of the byzantine scale ( phrygian dominant with a sharp seventh) is also popular with metal players.

I play a lot of surf and what's cool is there are some songs that sound great on acoustic as well. Usually the more chord or arpeggio driven ones. Surf guitar isn't the most common style anymore either, so it tends to draw some attention when you're playing with full reverb.

I saw Dick Dale perform a couple years before he died when I was probably 19. It was at a small side room at a club outside Chicago, he walked past me shredding on his guitar as his entrance before taking the stage in front of four 100W amps. Absolutely amazing show but I could tell towards the end he was really hurting.

I felt bad after the show, I took my pick guard off my guitar for him to sign but his manager asked for $20 to sign it as he sat behind a table looking very tired with merch of all the stuff he did going back to '54. It was sad to see he was so riddled with medical bills he couldn't afford not to charge a fan who spent hours playing Misirlou, Mexico, and The Wedge in his room all through highschool (I probably wasn't the only person there doing that). I didn't have any cash so I just walked out shaking his hand

The best modern surf rock is by a Ukrainian who goes by Amphibian Man, listen to The Last Wave if you’re interested in the classic surf sound and Clay Collosus if you’re more adventurous and willing to listen to Microtonal Surf Metal

Just like all great music, this was given to us because of a dare. His buddy said he couldn't play a song on just one string
