How to Add ENERGY to Your Beats! // Revealing My Secrets to Drum Programming

When trying to add energy to your beats, drum patterns and selection can make all the difference. In this video, we'll dive into one of my processes for drum programming and explore how you can inject life into your music productions. These are the steps that I follow to take my sample chop to the next level, and to get the characteristics of live drums.

For this beat, I used the MPC Live II as the standalone tool to flip the samples, including drums and melodies.

I hope you enjoy this workflow, and the sample based beat, and I hope the video provides some inspiration for your own production. I will be in the comments, so let me know what you want to see in a future video!

I admire your ability to plan & execute each part one step at a time. You don't seem to lose focus or 2nd guess your decisions. I personally be all over the place a lil too often lol

I understand your point about programming the drum track "like how a live drummer" would play, and YES, I do mute out certain drum sounds to sound realistic, Butttt, there's times I don't because I've also seen Live bands that would have (2) drummers and drum sets on stage, so that would "rationalize" my excessive drum programming...lol, I also use "Ratchet" in the 16 Level drop down, to make variations of snare rolls... #Salute

Congrats with your MPC Live 2. I bring it outside all the time, using a hardcase as a sunscreen. It's really liberating and inspiring. Small tip: The only important button missing compared to the MPC One is Program Edit. You can open it by default on the Live 2 with Menu + Pad 14 but I recommend configuring it to Menu + Pad 4. That way you can open Program Edit with a single finger stroke.

Dope!! I would’ve used a tambourine for the 16th note and not the shaker.

I'd love to see how you'd use more mid-high freq synth noises in a hip-hop beat, like what Mike Dean would work on or 'My beautiful dark twisted fantasy' sounds. Love your beats and vibe!

Do you just find one shots of drums that work well together? Or do you chop up a break?
